Depends on what you think of when you say "Slice of Life".

I tend to assume the things means a relatively normal setting with focus in character relationships. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a good one. His and Her Circumstances is a good romance comedy one. Summer Wars was pretty good if you're looking for something like the Digimon movies (but better). Patema Inverted isn't quite SoL, but fits a similar theme. A lot of those are movies, though.

Most people these days seem to think that SoL only refers to Azumanga Daioh-style series where you get little snippets of daily lives strung together for amusing situations. I don't much care for those, so can't offer too many outside the fairly common ones.

Measure the ingredients, put the water with the granulated sugar and mix it up, turn your stove on medium, and stop using a spatula or spoon to mix it from that point. I guess it's overcooking then. Homemade caramel usually tastes a little more bitter than the factory-made you'd be used to eating in chocolate bars and such, but it shouldn't be gross.

Following the colour might help a lot, here. The caramel will be bubbly & white/clear for a long while, and very suddenly go through yellow-amber-brown, so lowering the heat will make sure you catch that moment as early as possible.

When you add the water to stop the caramelization process, make sure it's hot (though it doesn't have to be super boiling or anything), and make sure you're measuring the amount right. You can leave it on the heat as you mix in the water, but it'll be hot coming off the stove and that in itself should keep it from hardening.

In a nutshell: try using a lower heat, be patient and vigilant, wait until it has colour before you add the water but it's okay to pull the trigger before it hits deep orange, since it sounds like you're consistently overcooking it at the moment.

Don't let the caramel turn black. If it's tasting bitter then you burnt it. Use low heat and make sure that the sugar isn't "stacked", use a pan that lets it spread across it evenly in a thin layer.

/pc/ liked early Maho, too. It gets progressively worse and around the end of the magic exam it and then stagnates for the rest of the show with the cures never developing at all. Which isn't bad by itself, but the Mahos barely had anything in the way of personality to begin with and in Riko's case she loses most of what little she has after the episodes with her sister. And yet despite this she still manages to be a far better and more interesting character than Mirai who is absolutely nothing and even has pink role taken away from her. By the end even the side characters who barely show up end up being more developed and likable than the leading cast.
