Why do people complain about western piracy killing the anime industry when it's way harder than it should be for consumers to pay for it? The companies can't even be bothered to put their shows on iTunes or something where people can buy them.
Well western piracy isn't killing the anime industry at all. The Japs don't care.
The anime industry made $18 billion last year, so it's really far from dying.

Aniplex top management did not go to their 342th loli escort girl outing, the industry is truly dying.
Even if it was easy to pay for it, I wouldn't. I don't like subscription services and the idea of buying digital goods doesn't sit right with me. I'd rather support the industry through buying figures from the show or the physical BD's after it's aired.

Even if you don't, others will. Hundreds of millions of dollars are made selling TV and movie digital downloads. And for consumers, those options are a lot easier and cheaper than importing figures or spending $50 on a 13-episode blu ray. Anime studios just leave all this money sitting on the table.

Western piracy has negligible effect on what Japan produces.
The only thing it affects it licensing companies trying to market Japanese stuff to the west and acting as an unnecessary middleman in an age where they simply are not needed.

Yeah I should have worded it better but I think piracy is a relatively minor issue. I was talking about OTHER people who believe this.

A subscription service like Netflixand not fucking Crunchyrollwould work fine.

Crunchyroll swears up and down that they're keeping the industry afloat but I don't buy it. They have a million paid subscribers. When you count fees and taxes that probably translates to between $5 million and $8 million. Their ad revenue is probably at most half of that. When you divvy that up between dozens of studios making hundreds of shows then that's not a lot of money. The way I see it Crunchyroll's biggest value to studios is as a way to get shows in front of people so that they buy physical merch.

Who the fuck cares about the studios? Most of those shows belong to the producers. Studios are just hired slaves doing work for the big corporations like Kadokawa and Toho that own the rights to the anime those studios make.
