Kaji was far closer to that. For Kaworu there were lusting and admiration of his calmness and confidence. He didn't ask Kaworu to guide him or to give him advises.
I though their couple would be codependent one with Kaworu constantly taking care of everything to make life easier for Shinji and Shinji happily accepting that staying weak and hiding from the problems but the Rebuilds proved me wrong. Shinji was taking initiative in their relationship and Kaworu wasn't trying to coo him away from the consequences of his actions and hardships but offering support. Of course I'm not saying that they can't be together after the End, actually, I would be kinda happy to see those two finally accept and understand each other (because they are too similar not to), although I don't really give a fuck. But Eva isn't a love story about two people who hurt each other, it's a story of self-seeking. Those two didn't love each other, but it doesn't mean they didn't care about each other at some extent and that they can't learn to. But implying that the whole theme was a love story of two damaged teenagers is stupid (although it kind of was to some extent). Also Shinji is gay for Kaworu

I don't think so, i don't think it has a relevance to the characters and the plot, besides light fanservice(not even in sexual way, something like friendship fanservice)
