It's actually not that smart to draw any conclusion on what kind of animal Kaban might be since all the animals are now in friend form. Tsuchinoko only came to this conclusion after having observed Kaban in her interactions, and Shoebill took her time with this as well.

I think the difference is that Flip Flappers took itself much more seriously in that respect and it felt like there was a palpable tonal shift when the focus changed taking away a lot of what people loved about the show.

I think in some respects Kemono Friends has managed to do what Flip Flappers tried to do clumsily and failed at. Make a show that can be enjoyed easily on a surface level without even thinking about it but have some mystery lurking beneath the surface.

Not to mention Flip Flappers just seemed to have way too many ideas and mysteries to resolve. Kemono Friends has kept it simple through and through but executed well. Flip Flappers was ambitious and up and down in terms of execution.

Flip Flappers was being held up as an intelligent show with deep themes and intriguing mysteries central to the show. Kemono Friends is hardly enjoyed in that way at all. There's nothing wrong with enjoying something, I don't disagree there. What's depressing is that the image posted shows a dissatisfied child. One of those guys could be nice and give her a turn. It's not like it'd kill them to let the target audience have a go too. Precure was made with both demographics in mind. It was litteraly meant as a successor to Sailor Moon which was immensely popular with otaku. Toei knew what they were going for.
If anything the most recent seasons seems to be more targeted toward little girls than in the past.

The problem with MLP was that it was a little girl's show that was made so that parents could enjoy watching it with their daughters.
Because it was designed so that parents could watch it with their kids, non parents wound up watching it and it exceeded their expectations. It wasn't that big of a deal at first, just some people on the Internet 'tee-hee we're watching a little girls show'. But then furries took over and others based their lives around the fact that they watch a little girls show. They even want as far as to say that the show redefined what it means to be a man.
Eventually people who watched the show for the novelty were slowly driven away until the fanbase became concentrated autism.

Kemono won't have these problems because watching a CGDCT show isn't that big of a deal. Its just that this one happens to be insanely popular at the moment

Japanese culture is really intriguing. This level of production is nowhere near professional standard in western media. But the show's joy is genuine. The same goes for Attack on Titan manga. The artist can't really draw things. But he had big idea and they allowed him to publish on the magazine. The result is tremendous success.

I've heard it said numerous times and I think it makes sense given the content of the show. It's even clearer with seasons like Smile that sometimes has humor or references that would go over the head of a little girl or Heartcatch where they put so much effort into sakuga and bothered with a higly stylish character design unusual in a show for little girls.
