I'm not really much of an Imaishi fan, but holy fuck, I loved this.

You could say that his other shows like KLK and TTGL explore the same themes with more depth and style, but I've never had such an attachment to those characters as I do in this show (to the point that I actually rooted for Luluco to win the guy). It was a great move to blow up a cutesy theme like "first love" into a huge universe-spanning adventure. I also loved how it gender flipped these shounen tropes (the trophy love interest, the MC who "proves" themself worthy), it would be awesome if other shows decided to do this in the future.

Not to mention, the humor just fucking clicks for me unlike in most Imaishi shows. Over Justice was a fucking great character and I love how deadpan Nova is. The references were all fun, but they don't bog down the show and make it merely a parody.

So yeah, stylistically it was a typical Imaishi show, but with that style applied to characters and concepts I actually care about.

I very ecently watched it as well and didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped to.
It's hard to understand how anyone loved it for any reason other than the animation.

the characters were fun and the world was interesting to me (minus the cross over universe hopping shit). but imo the ending ruined it, instead of showing how to get over your first broken heart the moral of the story was "keep trying to make the apathetic alien love you"
