If I may bitch a bit more, J.C. Staff has just been really lazy and perfunctory with the entire adaptation.

The directing simply moves from one line of dialogue to the next without ever pausing to think about pacing or building atmosphere. Look at the scene this week where she jumps off the building with the broom. Did you feel that heart-stopping vertigo moment, when she suddenly realizes that she can't actually fly?

I'll bet you didn't feel a thing. She jumps, falls for a second, and screams for help. Absolutely no *gasp* moment. They could have stopped the music, done a close up, maybe thrown in a heartbeat sound effect, anything else. Instead, we just get the minimum presentation of the plot events.

Look at the establishing shots. Do they ever give you time to enjoy the scenery and feel the change of setting? Last episode when they switched from the classroom to the hill where they did the Kokkuri. We get literally one second of panning up the hill before Kon starts talking. For goodness' sake, let the scene transition sink in for a few moments before you launch into the plot again. Anime has different pacing than a manga.

I understand Urara wasn't necessarily an A-list title, but it really disappoints me to see a story I love so much treated this way.

Nope, not in the slightest and it was too fast to notice anything - which may be realistic as she jumped from like the third floor and it's a short fall, but totally not emotional in any way. That was disappointing.

In general it feels like they're just adapting the 4-koma as is frame by frame adding more lewd and making some pointless changes, and I'm not really enjoying the show as much as I hoped I would, given that I'm also quite fond of the source material.

And the hell was that scene with Kurou that ended volume 1, it didn't feel mysterious at all, it was just oh ok some black rabbit thing appeared and Chiya was too drunk to talk to it or something.

It's weird because the adaptation is like 99% the same lines and scenes as the manga so in that respect it's incredibly faithful, but these little things pile up. Harikamo is great at drawing mysterious stuff (not so good at comedy but it's ok) and that's exactly what's lost and after the serenity of Flying Witch it's weird that JC Staff couldn't do it well. But well at least the girls are still as cute as ever so that will keep me watching.

Which may be an unfortunate consequence of the medium. Both of Harikamo's works, IMO, would be perfectly fine as standard story manga, but I guess the genre and the publisher meant it ended up in 4koma format. Perhaps through it all, Harikamo just got used to drawing 4koma.

Even so, lots of scenes don't read like your average 4koma do. There's lots of panel breaking in the more dramatic scenes, and many strips don't really have a punchline, but just continue into the next strip.

Yeah, I've always felt like Harikamo's works are a bit limited by the four panels. But does Kirara outside of Forward ever allow chapters in a normal manga format? Because I think a mix would work, most of the SoL scenes being 4komas feels right but then you get an entire chapter of plot in that format and some forced puns that didn't really have to be there as a result.

I've gotta read the Dandelion manga, I wonder how they handle that - liked the anime a lot but was too busy to actually check out the source.

That's how it looks, yes, but there are different aspects. Personally, I like that it follows the manga faithfully, but I don't like that the direction is kinda "animate it literally frame by frame" without taking into account the difference between mediums.

Although this kind of approach worked for GA but the comedy there was better and Sakurai's directing brings the best out of that. It did still lose some of the manga's more mellow or sad moments but that was excusable since the anime was distinct in its own way.

Cute girls doing cute things is serious business.

You can do plot in 4koma format quite easily, it's just if you stick to the same sort of pacing in the anime you just fly through it all with no tension or whatever is currently going on in the scene.

I think the best 4koma to anime adaption I've seen is probably Mikakunin de Shinkoukei. I didn't even realise it was a 4koma until someone said. Some of the kirara adaptions do struggle with just feeling too fast or too stuck in the 4koma model. ST was quite bad for it as well.

Fixed it. It was my computers problem. I still don't know what it was specifically but the very first fix I tried, to run windows troubleshooter on my player fixed it. It rolled the settings back to Windows 8 plain from Windows 8.whatever it is now and now it ran. Their was a bit of pixilation at that same point 7:44 but now I can rewind over it and it will replay right the second pass.
I dont' know what downloaded during the night but some update caused this.
Also in order to download it, I had to re-install Bit-Torrent again. My Norton uninstalled it at shutdown last night with out me telling it to.

I haven't been able to read the manga yet (the issues with no subs and not being able to read Japanese.) but personally I really like the anime adaptation. Maybe it's just on the strength of the manga along but not only has these series been absolutely adorable but the scenes have been heartwarming, humourous, and mysterious. Even with what you posted most of it seemed and felt the same to me. The falling broom part is the main part where it feels changed, and while I do agree that the manga does it better I think the anime does it fine in its own right. It still feels strong to me, and while it alters her motivation some I don't feel like it changes them that much. The implied notions of why she cares about Marie and how she feels about her is still there. I dunno. Personally I love the show myself.
