Does Shaman King deserve a proper adaptation?
nah
All I remember from the anime is Yoh farting.
Kenshin needs one first

Nah, the manga only looks good because how shitty the anime is.

I liked the anime.
Things are better if you see the anime as an anime, and don't try to compare them with the source material.
>>153495151
>wonder why they could't get the old VA's back
It is very likely the sponsors want to better promote the show by using more marketable new stars. If they were to have a remake they need it to be multiple cour, i.e. something that airs in prime time and sell merchandise to kids. They are unlikely to want it be midnight anime targeting adults who were fans of the old school stuff.
The amount of episodes needed to tell a Shaman king story just doesn't work in a midnight timeslot. So it was either go big or go home. And the author decided to go home.

So how do people feel about Takei's integration of machinery into later spirit designs. The X-Laws were probably the first example of this but it lent to their unique appearance. But as the cast leveled up more; Ren had a Passenger plane for his OS, Ryu got wheels (this makes sense though) And all of the armor oversouls became machinery.
I don't think it's bad but I've heard complaints about it in past threads. Personally I liked it better when OS had more of a natural aesthetic and things like the Angels (which were machine spirits) kept the mechanical look. Although I also think the Armor OS designs looked good overall.

>>153494116
Not really. In all honesty, Despite having really cool designs and decent art, the entire plot revolves around power levels (the worst I've seen in any shounen) and the plot feels really scattered and unfocused, as if the mangaka was making it up as he went.
>>153503076
>the plot feels really scattered and unfocused
this is the main draw desu
It follow Yoh's philosophy of everything will just turn out fine. It's about the journey and experiences you get on it.
As for power levels, since they never do beat the main bad guy nor ever had a chance, it's really not a problem. They're there to make things clear, but never the focus.
>>153503076
>as if the mangaka was making it up as he went
Isn't it always the case with WSJ (and alike series)? The author starts with some basic premise, than along with their editor they have to adjust to readers' demand, changing stuff around until they find the right formula, and even after that. There's no much time for some long-term planning, and at some point story just starts living it's own life. And to make matter worse, the weekly schedule oftem drives mangaka into health problems. I think One Piece (with all it's flaws) is an interesting exception in that it already runs 20 years (and will run for another 10) but Oda has ending and some milestones planned from the beginning, they just keep moving further ahead. The irony is that he was allowed (by fans and magazine) the slow start everyone else wanted to have.
>>153503476
Was One Piece's start really that "slow"?
>>153503010

>>153503572

>>153503615
Two things. A shit ton of anime filler and the last arc didn't get adapted
>>153503663

>>153503375
>since they never do beat the main bad guy nor ever had a chance, it's really not a problem.
Except it makes all of their efforts to stop him in vain. Why even read a story where nothing the heroes do matter because the bad guy is fated to win anyways?
>>153503560
Well, he was allowed to gather crew members in these short arcs until the things really started to heat up. Kubo wasn't allowed to make more short stories in Karakura and had to rush int Soul Society, Kishimoto couldn't do arcs introducing teams from different villages one by one, and had to do a tournament arc (and by the time he started liked it, he was forced to interrupt it). That's kinda what I meant.
>>153503663
Well sounds like I should just read the manga then.
>>153503775
Because it was about doing best they can for themselves and getting all those friends. When I look at it, I'm so happy I could read it and meet Ryu. There were some really memorable moments and it was a great adventure. Ending with a big battle would just make it more run of the mill. It wouldn't add anything.
>>153503782
Oda had to rush to the Grand Line too though, he had shit planned for Logue Town that was moved into anime filler because he couldn't do it. I guess it wasn't comparable to the other two, though.
>>153503714
Yes and the Jinchu arc is suppose to supplement that as Kenshin's backstory is explained in the Jinchu arc. Remember Tomoe's brother? He's the villain of that arc. Instead we get a rushed 2 episode ova.

He was an "honorable guy" before Tokageroh in the manga too

>>153504152
I mostly meant his portrayal, some redeemable qualities of his were only shown during the Tokageroh chapters (like the one you've cited). In anime he's shown as more likable guy even before, saving Yoh from Ren (as a way of repaying debt that also was anime-only) and willingly giving his sword to defeat Pyron (which didn't undermine Manta's determination since he fought for another guy's sword).
Therefore Tokageroh incident in the manga was more of "Look, this prick which was always shown as total prick wasn't really such a prick", and in anime, the Ren fight served this purpose, and Tokageroh mostly got him on proper track to become a shaman. Thanks to it it all seemed much smoother (his spiritual power was also signified before), less sudden and Ryu comes of as easier to like. My perspective might be flawed, since I started with the anime, but I can't help but like the anime version of his initial character arc better. Especially that, like I said, saving Yoh and Manta were really badass scenes.
>In the anime that scene isn't there at all IIRC and he just meets her in the Tokageroh arc
Like I say i don't remember the meeting but I'm sure he met her before in the anime, since he already was friends with them beforehand.

Seriously, I perfectly understand you liking the manga version more, but you completely got the anime version wrong. In anime, Ryu's gang are the ones beaten up by Ren and not just some nobodies. Yoh saves Ryu (like he saved the guy in the manga) and that's why he repays him after Ren takes him out. He is there the whole time.
Also it doesn't destroy the Pyron scene, since Manta risks his life against the other guy, gets beaten up but refuses to lose hold of the sword, and that's when Ryu arrives. Manta doen't claim the sword on his own though, so I'll give you that, but I think the spirit and determination was the point of this scene anyway.

Read my post again. The reason is: because the guy saved him 5 minutes earlier. Anime changed lots of stuff, but changed it without creating inconsistencies (at least there). I'm not saying you have to like it, but just say so, instead of trying to prove it doesn't make sense when you clearly don't remember it.
>At least in the Manga Ryu's character development is gradual and makes sense while in the anime his character just changes out of nowhere
To the contrary, I find Ryu's development in anime much less sudden.

>Some other gang leader

That's not anywhere near as impactful as the guy who previously beat the shit out of him and the man who was feared the most in Funbarigaoka

In the manga you feel like Ryu really felt that he seriously fucked up with the Tokageroh incident and that made him change his ways

yeah, i'm pretty sure it was by 4kids, but unlike any other 4kids adaptation they went for versions of the original songs instead of the american ones. I have no idea why, because that wasn't the case for Yu-gi-Oh, Pokemon, Digimon, Medabots, Beyblade, and probably all the rest .

>That's not anywhere near as impactful as the guy who previously beat the shit out of him and the man who was feared the most in Funbarigaoka
I understand this position, but while it is true in-universe, from the reader's (or at least mine) perspective - Ryu already got humilitated twice at this point, and that kinda make him lose this fear factor. And in anime it was a gang of ~5 people, standing up to them is still awesome, especially compare to his attitude from early in the series. But again, it's just my view.
>That reason is way too soft
Well, almost getting killed, getting saved by a kid you hated and starting to see spirits surely doesn't compare to getting possessed and fucking shit up majorly, but it still is quite much for a teenager. And it was gradual from this point, it didn't make the same kind of impact on him as Tokageroh incident in the manga. And its anime version also impacted Ryu - just in different way.
And again, it's all subjective, I get why you like the original version, but the adaptation isn't inconsistent in regard to this.

I'm more of a Tao Jun guy myself 2bh

>it picks up again in the last third of the manga
I had to agree, but maybe not the last third, more like the last quarter or last fifth. The last Patch tribesmen battles were intresting and they had memorable concepts and I like the ending a lot.
Maybe I just didnt really like the choices of some the spirits and users that the group battles on. In the early tankobons we see Yoh in many exotic costumes based on shamans of many different cultures. But in the end, Hao's entourage were mostly just a band of modern stereotypes, which to me, seemed less cool than the Gandhava group, who controls a bunch of actual buddhist spirits. Shame they got sidelined.
>>153494116
Some of the final parts i really didn't like and some i really really did.
I liked that after Hao won all the judges automatically bend the knee, even Silva but the whole rebirth thing and spirit switching really pissed me off.
The ending was pretty good regardless and better than the one on the anime so i am gonna say yes.
>>153506996
The thing is we actually never see Yoh and Manta hang out with Ryu between after he fights/beats Ren and when he fights Tao Jun so the change seems pretty much pointless
Is this where the japanese shaman girls are?
>>153494116
I would have liked to see more ofFlowerssince it started to finally looks interesting withHana getting is own spirits, i wanted to see his oversoul
>>153507069
>But in the end, Hao's entourage were mostly just a band of modern stereotypes, which to me, seemed less cool than the Gandhava group, who controls a bunch of actual buddhist spirits.
What?
Hao's team was probably the most diverse
And Yoh/Ren's team was the same modern shit
Shaman King started out on a Urban setting don't forget this
We had guys like Faust with his necromancy/skeletons, Ryu with his 70s fashion sense, Lyserg with his English Holmes style(god when he joined X-laws and got rid of his Holmes clothes did he become boring) etc. early on in the series
The Gandhava were pretty boring by comparison since they all looked/felt the same and had pretty forgettable powers/abilities
>>153507099
>the whole rebirth thing
This shit was a thing since Yomi Cave early on in the manga
When will you niggers let it go?
This makes sense considering it's a belief in Shamanism...it's not just a copout like in other manga
>>153507166
As I said - it's gradual in the anime. They aren't quite friends yet, Ryu's (expressed) view is that he just repaid his debt. It isn't until he sees Manta trying to get the sword and Yoh fighting Pyron, and he notices how great being a shaman is, that they become actual friends. And then we see them hanging out before the Tokageroh arc.
>>153507436
Manta trying to take the sword of a filler punk is still nowhere near as good as him trying to take it from Ryu
Which character did you change your view on the most when you switched over to the manga /a/?
For me it was probably Peyote or Marco.
>>153505486
Takei could get them to voice in the sequel/remake bit not their music.
Hayashibara doesn't mind singing in the OP, the problem is the companies being cunty these days.
>>153507388
I kinda would have accepted it better if they came back the way the rest of the spirits do on the story.
I guess that technically, since that whole part takes place on the way to the great spirits and all it could work like it does but i didn't quite like it since it really takes away some urgency and all when characters can't die... even if the focus is on getting to Hao in time.
Even so i don't think it's the same as the Yomi cave even though it IS the same. Allow me to elaborate because i know that doesn't make sense.
Conceptually it makes sense yes, but from the dramatic point of view is just too convenient and feels like a cheat.
The creator recently denied a remake because of they wouldn't get back the original voice actors and the original OST, so damn
>>153509523
Why couldn't he pitched an original sequel anime or Toei ask him to make plans on a sequel?
>>153504999
No it was completely different.
Fuck me, no wonder you retards think the anime sucked. You all watched the shitty censored 4kids version.
Speaking of which, why did Amerifats removed all the references to Faust being a doctor? Did they thought it will cause kids to be scared of doctors or what?
>>153498704
What are the liberties?
Anyone here even watched the actual anime than the watered down 4kids shit? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a91Yrhu2qEo
Shaman King was fantastic up until the Tournament, but then it turns into generic shounen shit. The only redeeming factor isthe antagonist actually winning.
>>153509976
You mean it was fantastic for the first 5 chapters?
>>153498947
Man, this song always makes me want to sing along.
>>153509976
You do realise that the SF started at chapter 26?
>>153505231
Eh, Horokeu's arc was slightly better, the one with the bear.
>>153509697
But there is a SK sequel manga matte...
>>153507828
>All those stereotypes wrapped into his appearance
>Still looks like a huge badass
How?
>>153507828
The vampire guy was slightly better in manga if I recall correctly.
>>153510082
>>153510297
I should clarify, around the part when they get to America. It's been almost a decade since I read it
>>153511018
You meant round 2 then.

>Things are better if you see the anime as an anime, and don't try to compare them with the source material.
You have solved all of /a/. Why do you still dwell in this place abandoned by providence to nemesis?
>>153509523
>recently
He was answering a fan's question in his tweet. He talks about an indefinite moment in past. Might as well been an offer from 10 years ago.

>Might as well been an offer from 10 years ago.
Extremely unlikely for several reasons.
>>153495314
What a plebby way to enjoy things.
>>153507388
>This shit was a thing since Yomi Cave early on in the manga
It only happened once when it was Yomi cave. Then everyone had to start dying like it was hot cakes to power up. It started to lose it's meaning and impact when people started dropping. Plus you had this whole "who will revive them this time" rotation of Jean, Ghandora, and eventually Hao.
Ironically, in a series about shamanism and ghosts. Death became pretty cheap. And for a series about shamanism, nobody just suggested going spirit walking or whatever cultural equivalent to power up after Yomi Cave. Takei didn't need to actually kill everyone to give them the boost but it was easier that way I guess.
>>153494116
only if we get to see some shota dicks. Ren's shota butt in his shower scene made me Bi.
>>153507009
I remember when she showed up in the anime, all I could notice was how they made her tits huge
What was up with these fucking lego shoes anyway?
>>153507828
Yeah, Peyote, Marco, honestly most of the X-Laws (the anime had Lyserg ditch Morphine, right?), and Choco.
>>153509366
>Conceptually it makes sense yes, but from the dramatic point of view is just too convenient and feels like a cheat.
This pretty much sums of my feelings on it.
>>153520042
He got a discount on them when Brocken bought his lego suit
>>153520042
Hao really liked Blocken or Bricken whatever the lego dude name was and may have really taken a liking to his style. Just shows he really liked some of his followers and didn't always treat them like shit like some villains,
so /a/ you are suddenly aware that you have shaman potential, what's your companion spirit ?
>>153520390
No one. No spirit would want to join with me because they'd realize that possessing me would be a living death and much less free than floating around and peeping on girls
>>153499341
those angel mechas thing are fucking cool
isn't this that anime that had like 10 episodes for the main character to be revived before he truly died or something?
>>153505972
BUT I KNOW IT'S MY DESTINYYYYY
>>153520390
It's be cool if I could get some electric nature spirit or anything that would let me use electronics as an effective medium. But I'd also like a human companion; someone scholarly.
Either way I'm clearing my debts and traveling the world.
RIP
