Akko and Diana are basically representative of different approaches (and in a sense entrypoints into) animation.

Akko's no good at it and has no real knowledge, but she's in love with it, she has the enthusiasm and energy she (and potentially it) needs. If (and when) she eventually actually gets some magic done, it may be rough around the edges but the intent and passion will be clear and will justify her role as a witch.

Diana on the other hand has tons of knowledge, and has been surrounded by it all her life. Diana's very technical proficient, while Akko's all about feeling.

In a sense, Akko is Imaishi, and Diana is Yoshinari. There's that interview where Yoshinari slated Imaishi for his lack of knowledge on anime history. He's also talked about how technical animators often lose sight of how the point of animation is like, the magic it can achieve, it's fun and entertaining. They can get lost in the technicalities, lose sight of the true goal.

The analogy only falls down with Diana also being a fan of Chariot. I guess the point is when you're young is when you're most impressionable, which ties into that Miyazaki comment about Panda and the Magic Serpent. It lays the seed but doesn't necessarily dictate how you'll define your approach. Diana seems to be proud of her technical knowledge. The analogy will hold up depending on how her love of Chariot manifests. Either she'll rationalise how it showed her the true power of magic, which'll be good, or she'll go through like an extreme personality change when talking about Chariot, becoming more like Akko, and say she doesn't really enjoy the technical side, that that part of her is more of a facade. I would think that's a bad move.

I love Yuri, and Akko x Diana is an adorable pairing to me, they have a cute dynamic together.
