Using D&D logic: goblins are only threats to untrained humans or in large numbers using squad tactics. Typically they cannot fight a trained soldier on even ground, but rarely would they choose to.
Note: under D&D logic, a level 1 of any player character class is not an untrained novice. They have trained for anywhere from a minimum of 1 year (Barbarians, Rogues, Sorcerers) to over 10 years (Clerics, Monks, Wizards) before setting out on their journey. Picking up a sword does not make you a level 1 Fighter.
Also under D&D logic: an untrained Commoner is one of the least capable foes there are in battle, able to be overcome by even housecats in solo combat.

Here is how I see it.

If you wear full body armor like pic related, which is strong enough to even repel arrows shot at close distance, the goblins can't do you harm because they are too small and weak with very short range. So as long as you don't let them stab you in some unprotected spot you are perfecty safe and should be able to take out the unprotected goblins with great ease. Get yourself a spear and a nice side arm such as a rapier and you should be able to take out dozens without any problem as long as you play it smart and safe.

In real life, human beings, despite modern technology and our superior size, strength and intellect, still get killed by all sorts of shitty animals. Every few weeks someone gets killed by a pet dog. People, just from what (amusing) news stories I remember, have been overcome and wounded or chased away by things as shit as owls, squirrels and rats.

If a rat, weighing in at about 200grams, equipped only with teeth and claws barely long enough to pierce human skin, can terrorise people then I reckon a goblin can have a good go at killing one.

You have such a reach advantage they can't rush you just like that. It is not about killing them, it is about incapacitating them, just poking them in the face once, so you could easily stab more than two before they get close to you.

They are small and weak, they can't just hold you down. Plate armor was revolutionary exactly because it offered great protection while at the same time having excellent mobility and being light. It literally makes weapons such as swords and knives completely useless because you can't penetrate the armor with them and you can easily run around with it. Then with a rapier or comparable as sidearm, do you know how quick that is? Does not even weigh 1 kilo with its center of weight very close to your hand. You can slash and stab with it several times a second, just like you could with a kitchen knife.

Yes, they can overwhelm you, just like a medieval army could overwhelm a tank. The key is to not let them overwhelm you. They have such short legs you should be able to run much faster than them. So as long as you don't let them corner (or surround if you are talking about hundreds of goblins) you, you can literally kite and hit&run them to death.

I guess they could rip your armour pieces off but that is difficult. They would probably just stab you through the visor with thin blades though or penetrate your armpits. So yeah, don't let them overwhelm and ground you.

When does a trope become a trope?

Goblins were dangerous in lord of the rings and in warhammer. There was another recent anime where goblins were killing newbies (can't recall the name right now).

It's not like 'goblins are actually really dangerous' is an original idea. There isn't actually anything original about goblin hunter, its just two conventions stuck together to make it look fresh, 'man fixated on revenge' and 'a dangerous enemy'. I think the only reason it even became popular was because of the rape scenes.

The human cities were getting hit up by demons and there was border tension between the elves and humans because the humans were afraid that the elves would attack while they were weakened. Cavalry charges often killed a lot of horses, but that didn't make them unsuccessful.

They are bipedal, but can run as fast as a canine on all fours. They have the physical strength of a retarded teenager. Ever fought a retard? Don't. Limited intelligence, so they can use basic tactics, but don't hesitate due to doubt. They'll sack your little pissant village before you even hit LVL 1 and pick up a garden tool. You are assuming that he can kill somebody with the first attack, which is usually not the case. While you are busy getting through the defense of the first opponent, the second one comes into distance and is now too close for your rapier while he can attack you at will.
What Serpico is using is much shorter than what people normally think of when they say rapier. You should also note that he is using the weapon to cut. Rapiers can cut, sure. But for cuts to be effective, you need to be closer to the enemy than for stabs. The closer you allow the enemy to get, the less you should think about "hit and run".
Cuts have a very important advantage while fighting against multiple opponents though: Your blade is available immediately after the attack, and doesn't need to be drawn out of the body of your victim.
Even rapier duels often resulted in double-kills because people didn't get their rapiers back out in time and were defenseless against their not-quite-dead-yet opponents.

tldr:
Don't take a rapier with you into a dungeon crawling with goblins.

It's because the newbies mostly don't listen to advice to form a party with more expirienced adventurers and skip potential training.

Also misconception as explained in the story.
