People talk about the low budget, but aside from the models not meeting everyone's taste, and some rough character animations in the earlier episodes, it's very well directed. The pacing of the episodes is excellent, the backdrops and lighting are gorgeous, there's a nice variety of scenery and scene changes without being too frenetic, good transitions between comedy and tension, and so on. The people making this seem to actually know what they're doing, and they're doing a good job.

It has that small team, "indie" feel to it (accurate or not), and fresh-sounding newbie seiyuu that makes it enjoyable to see it gain in popularity as we watch, as if we're taking part in nurturing its success. Some parallels to how Log Horizon was received here, too. While they haven't directly communicated with us, the director and Serval's VA retweeted screencap images from /a/ showing the series' growing popularity with the foreigners.
