In his golden phase Klimt portraits mostly women, Klimt saw women like the purest thin in the world and the song is religious chorus about a pure and virginal woman (just like Maria).
The whole point is to emphasize Lucy's innocense and her sacred role in the world as the first of a new type of humans. The show was a mess but the opening nailed what the story was about.

I've read the manga. I think the story as a whole has a lot of fat that could be trimmed. They had a chance to do so when they made the anime, but they dropped the ball, it was still full of plot holes and production value wise even the gore was poorly animated. What I imagine is something with late 80's/early90's visuals and the plot of Of Mice And Men.

Elfen Lied is pretty much all about taking the common clichés of the early 00s (Love Hina and Chobits being some of the obvious inspirations) and playing them in unusual ways combined with sudden bursts of edge (aka a "deconstruction"), though, so it would have been a completely different series if it were from the 80s or 90s. Elfen Lied is a child of its time for sure.
