Just fuck my movie up famalamadingdong.
I too am excited to see how badly Hollywood rapes GitS with yet another pointless reboot.
Not really. It probably won't live up to the anime so I'm not going to bother. If it comes out and somehow has overwhelming positive reception I'll go see it.
>>153409497
I'm cautiously interested.
I believe ScarJo actually likes the source material (I could be wrong), but Hollywood has been an almost constant disappointment these past few years.

That scene looks fine in the movie, because it's well animated and lighting and CG build don't really play in. But the shot in OP looks so terrible, even if it's the same background.

You're wrong.
>>153410293
You're wrong. You're so fucking wrong.
The closest she would ever come to that was in 95, when GitS was released. They should've just tried to find a decent Asian actress instead of pushing an over-the-hill sexpot for a few extra tickets.
Then again, ScarJo's deadpan non-acting might actually work for the Major.
Looks like kino is back on the menu boys
Why are Western adaptations and "spiritual successors"(ripoffs)so shit?
>>153410372
I'm going to see this just for the visuals alone, but did they really need to spoil the whole plot?
>>153410413
An asian actress would have made a better adaptation, but it wouldn't have sold the tickets they need to give it a decent budget. It always was going to be an a-list white chick, it's just bad luck that hollywood only has two to chose from at the moment that do action. And the other is JLaw.
>>153410465
Because Hollywood is a risk-averse business that wants to appeal to as many people as possible.
>>153410488
They didn't spoint anything, if you haven't watched the series, those scenes don't mean anything to you.

>that cheesyass dialogue

>>153410465
Cultural context and history.
>>153410505
But this is a "multi cultural" film. Everyone knows that "diversity" works for nerd medias because most nerds are heavily on the liberal side and would like a film better for sticking to source materials. Hell, even comic book movies get shat on for not sticking to the source, no need to add race to the controversy, especially when Aloha made a huge shit stain impression for white washing.
>>153410413
The problem is that the Major's blandness is supposed to look cool and imposing. ScarJo, on the other hand, can only look pouty and vaguely confused.
>>153410372

Is it just some made up pretentious german-or-fuck-other word for "high cinema" or something
>>153410714
It's a forced meme from /tv/. People use it unironically, which ironically, was the opposite of why it was forced in the first place.
>>153410714
Don't gaze at the abyss.
>>153410372
This actually looks pretty damn good as just a cyberpunk action sci-fi blockbuster.
It's definitely not like Ghost in the Shell, but I'm okay with it.
Some parts look really good.
I know the shelling sequence got butchered beyond belief, but eh, I'm not going to think of it as a GITS movie, but just heavily inspired
>>153410586
Man, you don't understand how this works at all. Hollywood isn't making this film for a niche nerd market that has already watched/read the source material, and casting an asian lead isn't going to suddenly make your cousin who majored in women's studies interested in some dumb action flick she's never heard of. This movie is being made to catch the attention of the league of marvel movie faithfuls, secondary "fans" who care more about seeing something they know than a piece of art. Accusations of white washing only help to give the movie lots of press coverage, and for an ip that most people in America have never heard of all press is good press.
>>153410714
It literally just means "movie theater" or "film" in German. It's like calling books "livre" and pretending you're saying something profound about their quality.
>>153410659
Not even: I was on /tv/ a decade ago making the same argument, long before I started coming here.
Hollywood puts a lot of money into making big tent blockbusters and they want a good return, so they make things that appeal to the lowest common denominator: the Michael Bay Transformers series, the new Star Wars. The only time they get somewhat original is around this time when they've got nothing else to run because it's too late for Oscar nominations and Christmas movies, and too early for summer blockbusters.
>>153410714
It literally means cinema in Finnish.
I just moved there for work when the meme started and it was really weird cause I felt like /tv/ was following my lifestyle.
Regardless memes are shit and memers should be purged.
>>153410813
The anime industry isn't even any different, you in-the-original-sense-of-the-word-weeaboo. Both hardly ever take any risks and appeal to the "lowest common denominator" in their respective countries.
>>153410817
It also literally means cinema is german
>>153410853
I didn't imply otherwise?
>>153410135
>ushers in a a new age of manga-to-film adaptations
Honestly this would be so awesome
Who knows, maybe hollywood could make a really good adaptation someday. Even if they didn't, we would get a bunch of dumb action shlock, and it's not like we wont still have the source material.
Plus it could get people into the source material who wouldn't have beforehand.
An overall Japanese influence on western tv/movies wouldn't be bad in the long run, we'd probably see interesting stuff down the line as a result.
because those fagots pepole say i dont wach cartoons and the same story on a movie oh that is faking awsome my conclusion :burn down hollywood

Meanwhile...
>>153410915
But memes have been shit way before that. I think I started seeing the downfall right about when the "for you" meme started.
It became obnoxious and they started making threads solely to post it. Ever since it's just become more and more memes and less and less discussion.
We're not helping because we're talking memes but I guess that's the subject of the thread.

Also a reminder that /a/ used to hate greentexting and reaction faces long ago.
>>153411036
Baneposting is the fucking textbook definition of a forced meme.Part of the reason I advocate for board deletion is because the rate of quality memes has dropped despite the exponential gains in board traffic. But if I recall correctly the girl from edge of tomorrow was sort of a bishoujo. But a bishoujo with abs.
So in a way they got that casting wrong too.

Emily Blunt looks too uneven in features though. She has the impression of a person from nowhere becoming someone through hard effort.

From what I've seen, they've stayed faithful to the original vision so I'm looking forward to it. Don't judge it for what it's not (an anime), because Arise was a fucking joke, and this is coming from someone who watched everything from GITS multiple times.

>>153409497
I would just like to remind /a/ that this is going to be a MASSIVE success and spawn an entire new Hollywood franchise.
Why?
1.) Because the race controversy is going to attract new people.
2.) Because "nude" famous big titted actress is going to attract a lot of views from those who would literally never go watch the movie otherwise.
3.) Because GitS the anime is actually plebcore, most of its viewers are almost normies, typically "productive members of society" at the very least (sheep who work in comp sci, engineering and so on).
4.) Most of the NEETs - the only people complaining about this movie rigt now - are still going to watch it. And some of them won't resist the urge to see it in the cinema instead of watching a bad camrip.
There is literally no chance that this won't be a huge success and with it it will ruin anime as we know it.
>>153409497
Heck yeah
>>153412314
What do you mean by "ib4"?And they already did, lots of times.
>>153412413
What a surprise, Hollywood picking something up that will be a success.
>it will ruin anime as we know it
I know you're unironically saying this.
Is the plot of the movie that I saw from that second trailer present in one of the anime? I've only ever watched stand alone complex and second gig, and can't remember any of this "they made be, but they can't control me" stuff.
>>153412437
>What a surprise, Hollywood picking something up that will be a success.
It is a surprise. Most of Hollywood movies are failures as a big franchise. You don't even realize how many times they try and fail, because you think "ah this movie has grossed almost double its budget that means thatGhostbusterswas a success and will spawn a lot of new sequels!"
>I know you're unironically saying this.
Of course I am. This means they will try it a lot more often and ruining a lot more anime movies in the process.
>>153412474
It's a loose adaption of the fact in Second Gig you find out in the arc with Kuze that the Major was a Jane Doe cyberized at a young age after being the lone survivor of an airline disaster, so her entire life and past was lost, no body, no memories, no name.
>>153412481
Unless they have a say in actual anime (protip: this isn't an anime movie, it's a 3D movie based on an anime), I couldn't care less.
>>153412481
They can do whatever the fuck they want. This is a non-issue. It's not like our japanese cartoons are gonna change.
>>153412199
Now I don't really feel like defending the anime industry, but I feel that's 80% a product of Japanese work culture rather than an animator-specific problem.
This is complete conjecture though. Is there any good documentaries about it, I'm legitimately curious.
>>153412549
Nah, of course it's what you say. They even have their own word for people who die of overwork. But it's a good thing to keep in mind if you don't want to seem like a weeaboo who praises Japan when the industry is the same nasty shit (and worse in many aspects).
>>153410003
It honestly isn't.
The first GiTS is a tight cyberpunk experience, packed with action, interesting thoughts, and science fiction.
The second GiTS is the worst navel gazing I have ever seen, when people can't enter an elevator without spouting philosophical quotes. Literally. Try to find 5 minutes of the movie which isn't some second rate philosophical navel gazing.
>>153412620
The worst thing is it's completely out of character navel gazing by two people who would not do that
>>153412616
The word is 過労死, if anyone's curious.
>>153412437
Hollywood ability to fuck up can never be underestimated.
The Dragonball movie's success was practically handed to them on a plate with the nostalgia factor guaranteeing an entire demographic. All they had to do was stick to the script, get good costumes, nice CGI for the kamehamehas and promote it with a shitload of nightshow appearances, and get some of the old music from the English anime dub get it into the soundtrack and on the trailers.
>Western people extremely outraged and out for blood because main character is white and not Asian.
>Meanwhile, in Japan, they have no problem with it at all and everyone assumed the actress would be white in the first place.
Why Japanese people, why?
>>153412696
They have no balls and status quo is God in Japan.
>>153409497
If she's a cyborg that can look like anything she wants, then why does she have a wrinkly old jew face?
>>153412696
They're not even ignoring that. In this the Major before being cyberized and losing her memories WAS Japanese. It's just another aspect that's been lost to her.
>>153412616
That's hilarious, I am a full time computer programmer and I earn as much money as the lowest of the low on this list.

do you think they'll have her properly switch back to asian by the end?
>>153412740
Are you serious mate? I'm a computer programmer and I'm well into the chief animator range. They're not really well paid.
>>153412767
Why would she? It's not what she is anymore. "The Major" is going to be who she is.
>>153409497
Why did they cast an ugly, fat, white woman as Motoko Kusanagi?
>>153412696
Because they're not rabid SJWs who understand that people are gonna want characters in their movies of the same ethnicity as them so they can relate better to them, and have every single character played by Japanese actors regardless of original race in their own movie adaptations?
>>153412833
hiroshi abe has superior jomon genes though, he's handsome enough to play this.
>>153412792
Well I'm earning like double the national minimum wage. Maybe once I'm 30 something I can move on to "part timer" and "episode director" in my 40s.

>>153412727
This, one of the biggest themes of tge whole franchise is how technology allows one to alter their appearance and identity at will, and the aliention from the body and one's cultural space this creates. You'd think with how many of them are English majors obsessed with post-structuralism bullshit, SJWs wouldn't be quite so retarded to miss this and get offended by the thing the work is likely intending to criticize.
>>153412886
i don't know what you mean, she's 10/10 total embodiment of beauty

This isn't true. Nerds are on the cutting edge of culture. Multiculturalism is far from cutting edge at this point. Maybe 60 years ago, it was, but not anymore. Hollywood panders to the shallowest, lowest common denominator of mainstream culture and that's it. It's for normies.
>>153410789
This is true.

Just look at OP's pic. She's really not at the top of her game anymore. Also, being a hollywood actress means you're held to a way higher standard than a girl just walking down the street. For a girl at your workplace she'd be pretty great, but that's like judging a meal at a five-star steakhouse against Outback fare. Honestly, by hollywood standards she was never that exceptional, compared to your Audrey Hepburns this is like a Hollywood 5/10.

It's interesting that in that trailer you can see how they fucked up so badly by miscasting the Major and telling Scarjo to do her mumble mumble "acting" instead of actually having her act for most of the movie, and then show you how powerful her actual acting is when she isn't trying to play an "emotionless" mumbler. Motoko was never a voiceless computer, she was human and had all the emotions, and expressed them all.
They just can't understand it in Hollywood.
>>153412616
I've always been critical of the negative aspects of Japan. The rigid conformity, the unquestioning obedience, the lack of citizen participation in government, the "Iron Triangle" of special interests, the tendency to ignore embarassing subjects rather than address them, the pervasive xenophobia, and all that other crap. Anime is only the shiny veneer on a society that is in some ways deeply troubled. But it is a fascinating window, especially where you see tension between the anime industry and the broader society of the country.

It didn't really flop but it just barely scraped by. Sony indicated it needed 200 million to break even, which is pretty low because it cost 144 million to make and usually you need to double your budget to break even, but Ghostbusters had a lot of tie in shit.It got 229 million. with all the merch and other shit around it it probably made Sony some money but they though this was going to be their billion dollar gravy train like the Marvel movies and Star Wars are for Disney. They had a whole production company set up just around Ghostbusters that got quietly shut down. Though to be fair I think Sony thought they'd be able to distribute in China. The Chinese government banning it probably assraped their aspirations for the franchise.

Fuck me, kek'd hard.
I like Batou.
Movie will be trash.
>>153410003
Disagree as well.
It's visually stunning and extremely creative. Also, seeing the story from Batou's perspective and how he deals with life now was pretty damn great.
Still, like anon said, the writing really killed what could've been. They want a little overboard with the "deep philosophy" I feel, to the point where it felt dragged out at parts. Still a worthy sequel to the original, and it doesn't feel forced or like a cash grab at least.
johansen is voloptuous. soft, white, and fatty. she doesn't have a convincing athletic build and this picture looks retarded.
really hopes this shit flops though, the last thing i think anyone of us wants to see is manga becoming the new creative well for kikewood to suck dry like they did with american comics

Imagine being the Puppet Master in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Motoko Kusanagi, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally merge my consciousness with you, both my ghost and the real me." when all he really wants to do is hack another loli sexbot in the red light district. Like seriously imagine having to be the Puppet Master and not only lay in that sewer while Kusanagi flaunts her disgusting body in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing her stretchmarks and leathery skin, and just lay there, take after take, hour after hour, while she perfected that dance. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone on set tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, KUSANAGI LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to lay there and watch her mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been hacking nothing but a healthy diet of foreign diplomats and politicians and later Section 9 staff for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Section 6. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it in to writhe it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to lay there and merge with her "statuesque (for that is what she calls herself)" beauty, the beauty she worked so hard for with personal trainers in the previous months. And then the Minister of Foreign Affairs calls for another hacking, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the cyberpolice could shut you down, but you lay there and endure, because you're the fucking Puppet Master. You're not going to lose your future ghost over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Her body just does not align with the statuesque, cool beauty of the major. It's like a freak god being played by power lifter.
The the crowd goes mild.
That newest trailer was physically painful to watch.
How can people still seriously keep writing cliched lines like "I will find him, and I WILL kill him" or "they made me, but THEY CAN'T CONTROL ME"? How do they thinkl this shit is not only worth including in their movie, but fucking worth putting in the goddamn promotional trailer?
Like holy shit. What's the point of even adapting something if you're going to flatten its premise into a bog-standard action flick about a LOOSE CANNON ACTION HERO OUT FOR REVENGE
I hate absolutely everything about this. I am not ashamed of my emotions, but frothing at the mouth every time I think about it gets tiresome.

The Japanese workers simply want to conform. That's why they didn't fight Scarjo cast. See Disney rip off of Kimba. The response by Kimba creator was simply conformity rather than fighting it in court of law.

Honestly, the major should have been played by some manly looking girl from womens wrestling. It's not like you need a really great actor to play a stonefaced robot, but you need a tall ass, muscular girl, to make it look like she is a full cyborg.
And i still think that they missed a perfect opertunity, by not casting Mickey Rourke as Batou.

I think the worst part about this is you can see that they actually knew the source material. They lifted so many shots but what I can't understand is why lift the action bits wholesale but then completely fuck up the story bits? I hope the trailer is clever misdirection, Kuze could have implanted Motoko with fake memories to manipulate her which would be a good plot twist and be faithful to the GITS universe.

Puppet master, laughing man, and Kuze have all been rolled into one. Nothing can be faithful anymore.
