My best guess is that Goku's bad at keeping secrets, and Vegeta finds out that the universe will come to an end. And him being a decent family man, will want to protect the universe for his daughter.

They changed the opening for the first time since 76 episodes. And the music & animation is all about the tournament.

I realize that this is some shoddy evidence, but this leads me to think that the arc will either be very long, or the show is finally finishing.

I'm mostly looking forward to seeing many old techniques I haven't seen in a while, and maybe even new techniques I haven't seen before.

I didn't see this brought up in the episode, but did Goku just doom 11 out of the 12 universes? Isn't he indirectly responsibly for the death of a trillion-trillion lives?
