So I just watched Royal Space Force. That shit is beautifully animated, but as an actual story I felt it left a lot to be desired. It was a few years back when I watched Jin Roh but I remember feeling much the same about Jin Roh.
Why was Royal Space Force so critically acclaimed? Am I just too much of a pleb to get these types of films?
It wasn't really that critically acclaimed. General thoughts were similar to yours; god-tier animation and world building but story was amateurish and not in the fun way

Also recently re-watched this. Great visuals, story was kind of simple.
What I did enjoy immensely was the storytelling and progress of space travel - how no one believed the rocket would fly in the first place. Also, how every "pilot candidate" grew as the story progressed to become engineers and/or important members of the team.
The world was also quite unique - surreal but still "real".

Because the final countdown set-piece is literally perfect. Also, world-building. The rest... they could certainly improve the story telling.
