Asuka was not a Spoiled Brat, She worked hard for everything, school (finishing college before age 14) and what not, and eventually to become a Eva pilot. However when Toji became one from thin air, she was furious that he became what she thought she worked hard for. In the end Asuka's mind break was a culmination from her realizing that all the effort she worked hard for was all actually mute, her zero sync rating/no one looking her from mom educed childhood-trauma.

Asuka is not a spoiled Brat, she was entitled; believing that she earned it after all her hard work.

Rei functions as a opposite to Asuka heavily for a lot of the series. Hell Shinji's Eva is the mixture of their colors Blue and Red.

I think Rei is someone without contact and anything related to self worth. Not even negitive, just she exists. You can see this a lot in the early episodes where she seems ready to die. She's not a functioning person stated by Misato/Ritsuko and does not react when Shinji enters her room or touches her, which would have been Shinji's life had Misato not taken him in. This is an ultimate contrast to Asuka the fiery red will compared to the calming blue. She is one who will fight off death even in the face of it as she actually chants "I will not die" repeatedly before getting killed by MPE's. She's also very popular and desires attension to survive, while piloting for her praise and that why she did work so hard.

I think Rei's growth is mostly done by the time Asuka arrives as she's quite boring, but that's because that is all she's known in life. We only get to know the basics which conclude Rei's character arc, between her understanding herself, and her relationships with particularly Shinji and Gendo. These things had been concretely building up as we go. But then there's the rest.

Asuka is a much simpler and cheaper character to understand. She is static and doesn't offer any intellectual exercise for the viewer, and she has practically zero development. She is a cliched character (and a copy in fact) insofar that she is the classic individual who is defined entirely by her past trauma which she cannot move on from. This more or less seals the character as a non-mystery, we've already seen all there is to see. It's just an exercise of the inevitable and predictable from start to end.

We know why Asuka is, in short terms, a bitch - it is because she's insecure about herself. That was telegraphed since the very first scene, she attacks the children for having seen her panties, even if it wasn't their fault. The entire character basics in that one scene, although without the specifics which come later. It never changes from that point on.

You're kidding obviously. No one disagrees that the characters were changed in 2.0, and in part 1.0 for that matter, but the thing people disagree about is HOW they were changed. You may write this:

but how is this any different from how Asuka and Rei were in NGE during the first twelve episodes or so? Asuka never had much importance in the plot or the story, she was a foil to Shinji who had no chance to affect anything. Rei was always a cornerstone of the plot and something we would always return to when it came to moving the story onwards in some way. Rei is also a foil to Shinji and even Asuka, just as they become foils to them. This is what complex character interaction looks like.

What did change with 2.0 as far as Asuka is concerned, is that Asuka was stripped of all flaws and becomes more "ideal". This however does not mean she can't be a good character by the end of the story. 3.0 ends that possibility however, which is why many are angry.

With Rei, we went from a character that was growing and very much possible to develop further, into a complete dismissal, abandonment and destruction of the character, on a very, very base level.

Asuka has less screentime, this is because Rebuild spends more time on attacking Rei than it does on promoting Asuka. That's how it always works.

Even when Rei dies in episode 23, she comes back minutes later and continues to develop.

In Rebuild Rei dies halfway into the series while still lacking major character points that actually make Rei's death mean something. In NGE, Rei died in episode 23, that's at the very end of the series! Rei's death was pushed forward so they could remove the character from the story.

What's more, they bring in Rei Q, who isn't Rei. But Rei III fills the same "plot role" of being a Rei that Shinji cannot communicate with properly, and therefore with Rei Q, Rebuild has sabotaged and made impossible the development of Rei II's character. There is no room for it in Rebuild.

To say that Rei isn't a victim of Rebuild would be a lie. It's as true as everything else we've agreed on.

Asuka isn't stated to be a genius - this is the erronous wish-fulfillment delusion some Asuka fans spread. The show does not in any way support that she is a genius. Even if we just conisder EVA-piloting, the true genius is Shinji.

It all goes to show that ASuka fans are incapable of processing the real, objective facts of Evangelion. Even if Rei does things better than Asuka, such as in the twister episode, or Asuka makes obvious miscalculations like with Zeruel, they dismiss it and still pretend she's a genius. Evenif the story shows that hey, there are people that are far better than Asuka.

Asuka was made to be an idol-like character. The point of Evangelion is to subvert this archetype, and show you how shallow it is, and show you that Asuka is nothing more than a broken doll. It is contrasted with Rei whose appearance and demeanor does indeed remind one of that of a doll, but as the series shows, Rei had an iron integrity and an indomitable will that could not be broken.
