i don't think the imagery promotes Guts as a protector, but the true Casca articulating that Guts's devotion to her is futile. The emaciated dog/horse that's dragging the coffin is representative of Guts holding on to something that's lost forever. Casca's character was never particularly stable, and her development was based in never really progressing. I've always felt there was a certain insincerity to her romance with Guts, which made it much more realistic. The defining moment of her character for me was telling Guts she had to stay with Griffith right before the eclipse. She had a perfect chance to break a cycle of dissatisfaction and she reverts. I think Casca wants to be dead, i don't think she wants to come back.

I agree. I am a big shipfag for them, but you gotta admit there is a bit of hesitation on Casca's side, because she loves Griffith platonically. He was her first love and the meaning of her life for too long. When she gives in to Guts, she is no longer true to that important part of herself and starts to completely change who she was until then. Or tries. She says it herself.

But the time they spent together with Guts was simply too short and overshadowed by other, more important events to see the results of the change, if any. We didn't get to see inside Casca's head anymore later. She must have felt guilty because of Griffith's hopeless situation and confused by her feelings for Guts. She didn't move on from that spot since.

But she definitely can't go back to Griffith, she betrayed the old Griffith and Griffith betrayed old Casca. She will probably run away from Guts too, though, and try to find the moonlight boy/her demon baby.

I'm not denying that she pities him. It's just that a lot of people were theorizing that Guts would be depicted as a monster in her dreams, maybe even more so than Femto. I'm releived to see that she recognizes what he's going through.

I've had these thoughts before. While all this makes quite a lot of sense, and I think it would be the most natural character progression for casca (which is no progression at all, ironically), it makes continuing this story extremely difficult because this natural progression would pretty much destroy all of Guts' character development. Casca either ending up dead or not wanting anything to do with Guts will leave him left with nothing but the beast of darkness, thus ruining all the time he spent getting over his thirst for vengeance. It will also assuredly mean the end of Guts' new party. So the possible reactions that Guts could have are:
-he gets mad (which would really fuck everything up as well as the "revenge is meaningless" message Miura's been trying to tell us for the past 10 year),
-he gets sad (which would fuck up the progression of the plot, and is a bit out of character for guts)
-If she goes to follow the moonlight boy, he follows her (also fucks up story progression, also not very likely)

My personal opinion is that Miura has written himself into a bit of a hole, where he either has to make one character act out of character, or asspull heavily.

No, but there is an issue of what he does next. He cant just give up, that IS out of character and he cant go on a murderous rampage. What seems possible to me is this:

They had some good moments. I remember those traced scenes in Ep4 I think but those hardly count for skill. Then there's the animation of Nina crying to Luca in the barrel (middle of Ep7 I think) and the few seconds before he cleaves those pompous fucks in two at the start of Ep2. We've all probably seen the more terrible scenes already. They've been circulating the web and the Berserk threads on /a/ ever since the anime has aired.

Whenever I think about this deeply I just cannot go over how badly they have fucked it all up. I can perfectly get why they did it, since people have discussed that a proper adaptation would take way too much money to be on the level of Miura's art, but bouncing back in the opposite direction and making it look terrible is no solution.

I wonder how Miura feels about the anime. The interview suggests he enjoyed watching parts of it.
