I watched Bake and Nise and felt like I was done with the series. It was okay but I didn't feel like continuing. Then I kept seeing Ougi everywhere and she always interested me so I finally just said fuck it and I just skipped to Owari. I came for Ougi and absolutely loved and felt for Sodachi. I don't remember ever feeling like this from the other seasons I watched. Anyway I'm planning on reading the books now because I want to know her and the other characters better. I think Shaft did a good job with the adaption except it's kind of annoying when an inner monologue is flashed on the screen and I have to pause it in order to read it. Shaft didn't really do a good job with the adaptation at all. The novels have their wacky moments, as is to be expected being that they're basically a drop box for the ideas of such an eccentric as Nisio. But the way they're written is mostly as understated tone pieces which are great at subtley but strongly conveying emotion. Shaft's adaptation is over dramatic in the extreme, shifts between tones every minute and never delivers on each, and lacks a lot of emotional impact. I read the English translations of a few of the novels across the series, I haven't read them all or the original Jap texts of any of them, but even just the translated ones I read were enough to convey just how different the novels and anime are. Sodachi and her arc are very tragic and will be able to convey some emotion no matter how they're presented, but actually reading from Sodachi's POV in the novels was one of the most emotionally wrecking experiences I've ever had. I came out of each chapter feeling both miserable and amazed at how well Nisio created tone through her narration. Her feelings of isolation and paranoia that come from being disenfranchised from society, which are very relatable for me, came through so raw and strongly throughout the entire story.
