Season 2 is when it finally becomes a Togashi show. If you don't at least like Gon though you're probably wasting your time. It stays very slow throughout.

Which version are you watching? 2011 or 99? 99 has a slower start.

The characters never get any better.

I can't quite put my finger on it but the characters never really feel alive to me. Like robots pretending to have emotions.

The vast majority of characters are uninteresting and one-dimensional in the '11 series. Good visuals, everyone is so boring, and the pace is inconsistent. Sometimes it's a grinding halt, other times it's brainnumbingly fast, and almost never is it in between. The heavy focus on Killua in the second half of S1 and all of S2 is also hard to stomach, since he isn't a good character at all; not in the original, not in the '99, and not in the '11.
