I am with you. When I read the manga I actually liked Kagome pretty much, because she somehow was less of a bitch and more sweet and smart. The anime also made her look a lot more dumb, from what I remember. She also doesn't say sit quite as much, I think there are very rare the instances she says it in the manga.
Manga Kagome is also very cute.
My guess is that they tried to emulate Takahashi's previous heroine, Akane from Ranma, which is way they made Kagome so unlikable.

I don't know, personally I feel that I would've accepted such an ending if not for me investing ten+ years of my life in the series. By the end, I wanted Inuyasha and Kagome to be happy, and for such a long series to end in a bittersweet way, I don't think I would've been able to judge the ending on its own merits without being disappointed. Also, the entire story was about the eternally recurring struggle around the Shikon Jewel, and since it was finally resolved by screwing destiny and wishing for the jewel itself to disappear, I was happy that Inuyasha and Kagome were also able to screw destiny in regards to their separation and open up the well one last time.

I started watching Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku and Ranma when I was very young in the mid-to-late 90s, then got into Inuyasha when it came out. Now I've read and/or watched everything she's ever put out and I'm currently both reading and watching Rinne. She'll always be my favorite mangaka.

The scenery in the manga/anime is great, but going back to it now, I forgot how many people/things get murdered/obliterated in fights.
