Eva was raw creative energy mixed with reverence and rebellion of everything he loved when he was young. A lot of abstract thinking, and very gonzo. He has a much more finely honed pen at this point and the life experience from which to draw far more mature and deeply engrossing work onto the screen.

Eva is probably the only great thing, but he did a lot of very good things. Kare Kano would be brilliant if he were able to land it properly.

If you want the fun action adventure side of Eva, Gunbuster and Nadia. If you want the introspective feeling, more anime end of the spectrum go with Kare Kano, more art film then his live action movies Love and Pop and Shiki Jitsu.

Shin Godzilla is also good. The live action Cutie Honey is probably his worst directorial work but still amusing.
