I just finished this masterpiece, it was perfect from begining to end, literally no flaws, it's probably the most inteligent piece of art a have ever watched, not only from anime, but in general.
This scene in particular... is this best directed scene of the audio-visual media ever created?. I did know that this show was gonna be special and I did know that it was gonna have deaths, but this... This scene is just so fucking great, it has not epic or sad music, or blood, or a close-up or an emphasis, and nothing, I don't know if that is the reason why (probably is just a part because I've watched this kind of stuff many times and it never felt like this) , but it actually fucking does manage to convey what you actually feel when you find out that a familiar/friend has died. It just feel so fucking real, everything in this show feels real, the characters, even the context of the abilities is actually plausible (its very possible that if there's a civilization advanced enough they could be trying to stop the theoretical eventual end of the universe caused for the lack of energy aka "big freeze"), I mean, even the most fanciful things would make sense in the real world, but holy shit...the fact that even the fucking deaths feel real is what put this in a entirely new level for me...As someone who loves Eva I'll have to say that this is better..

it's apparent you are young or have not experienced a wide variety of artistic expression. madoka is good, but calm down. it has an analagous story that isn't anything new, characters that lack depth and aren't anything remarkable(most are kindof bad actually), DM-fiat style plot forcing(time travel is lazy), etc. etc. not the most original thing ever made.

I guess I should rewatch it because it has been many years since I last saw it but I very much remember it revolving around an insecure boy who falls apart whenever he's forced into a man's role and seems happiest when playing with another boy. A big reason I like TTGL so much in comparison is because Simon is basically Shinji at first but he makes himself into the man he wants to be.

I very much disagree with that. I guessed the story arcs of both of the main male characters in ttgl before their conclusions, because they were fairly comparable to typical character arcs in an unrealistic hero action story. I think maybe if you project yourself onto the characters in a series, you'll be happier with someone who responds to stressful situations unrealistically, or builds into some kind of badass, or makes some kind of badass sacrifice, or maybe that kind of character pumps you up in an escapist kind of way. that's fine, I'm not telling you what you should and shouldn't like. I think the idea that ttgl had better written characters than eva is a farce, though. shinji acted real, felt real, behaved in a realistic manner, had depth of emotions and thoughts and a history of experiences that effected his decisions that was drawn out throughout the series. kaji and gendo are both extremely dynamic characters where you get a large sense that you are seeing the tip of the iceberg of their personalities with what you see in the story. it's very difficult to sense their motives, but you get the idea that their decisions are meditated on with intellectuality and purpose. it's a bit of an accomplishment for someone to produce such depth.

The story is somewhat convoluted to fit into the established canon. By no means bad but nowhere as clear cut and (reasonably) straightforward as the show. However, visually I would say it is on-par, if not superiour.

Absolutely nothing happens for the first hour+, a new character is introduced for no reason and does absolutely nothing, Sayaka can now turn into her witch form at will, and Homura's motivation is weird as fuck and contradicts the ending of the series.
The show was self contained with nothing to really continue off of. Rebellion could only add a tiny bit of additional content before rewinding everything to allow for more sequels.

It is a very good series. I was very shocked when I first watched that scene. I thought it would maybe have been a little darker than other magical girl shows I had watched but I was not expecting all of the suffering. The sadder parts really made me feel for the characters though and I love them very much now. Overall I think it is a very good show.
You should watch the movie sequel if you have not yet done so. It is very good.

The way the first three eps were designed was clever. The cute opening, the wide faces, colorful world, the cute ending, etc.. Then comes ep.3, where you see the series true colors and tone. All of which is compounded by the cute end being replaced by the darker end, while you sit there still taking in what happened... It will always be one of those shows that you will wish to experience for the first time again.
