Actually it's not that hard to excel at both. Smart people are smart regardless of their field (unless they are autistic). They may just dislike certain areas of study but they can easily be taught them.

If you have a smart writer a good math tutor who would teach them from basic math onward you'd see remarkable gains. I think that's what this whole manga is going to be about anyway (though it is very odd that they're both so bad at the academic areas they want to study).

That's not even really close to true. If you're truly talented in one area it's fairly rare to be talented or skilled anywhere else. That's what makes the special few who can, well, special.

At least that's my experience from university. Engineers and mathematicians completely baffled and frustrated at the prospect of examining text, English majors and artists complaining that sciences were mandatory and not elective. The elusive so-called "Renaissance Man" is one I've never met.

That said if you're good at studying then anything in school can make you looks intelligent, seeing as most school systems are based on test work, and thus you can largely get away with a good memory and basic concept understanding, provided you have both.
