You are talking about two different kinds of wars.
Before WW1, it was considered a manly activity to grow as a person. Casualties weren't too bad. So a good soldier could reasonably expect to live through the experience. (barring bad luck)
But when modern weaponry came along, who lived or died became largely a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Casualties weren't just extreme, they were surreal. It didn't matter at all if you were a good soldier or a bad one. Often it didn't even matter how many soldiers you had with you as everybody got mowed down in a matter of seconds.

But this being the first great war that this fictional world is experiencing it is to be expected that there are many soldiers who have been brought up with the pre-war mindset and haven't had a chance to let go of it yet.
>>
>>153141231
So was the secret, real reason they made Tanya look goofy as hell in the show itself, that she'd be easier to animate and look good enough in off-model scenes instead of Izetta's travesty?
>>
>>153148540
You forgot the Philippine-American War and the Boer War
>>
>>153150645
No, I don't.
These pre-WW1 wars failed to register with people.
Logically speaking it wouldn't even have required a demonstration of what the new weaponry was capable of. But no one believed it until the corpses piled up in the hundreds of thousands in France, and at that point there was no stopping it anymore.
>>
What's a jingo jungle?
>>
>>153148540
No. Basic wounds, even something as simple as a scratch from a dirty polearm, would fuck you to hell in previous wars. The difference is what was being fought for. A noble cause is incredibly important for people to withstand things, and without that, you're left with nothing but misery.
>>
>>153150881
>No.
Yes.
>Basic wounds, even something as simple as a scratch from a dirty polearm, would fuck you to hell in previous wars.
Casualty percentages were completely different from what we had to get used to in modern conflicts.
Right now we have established new tactics to reduce casualties again, but modern war is still more dangerous than traditional warfare was.

No, during the Russo-Japanese War, everyone watching in disbelief how IJA overran Russian lines of barbed wire trenches with machine guns backed by artillery with apparently retarded head-on banzai charge. With their technology and military power, its feasible that the countries will focus on anti-air. I'd assume some form of light anti-personnel rail-gun to shoot high-charge rounds via electricity would be easy to create.

>>153153114
They have limits, and flak cannons will shred constantly. How can they assault or raid if they have to focus 24/7 on defending? Even at night, they glow due to their magic. Just pummel them with cannon fire.
>>
>>153153027
Enemy mages could definitely take out people from her Battalion, but Tanya is pretty much invincible right now without better tech.

No anime with a loli MC can be good
>>
>>153151075
It really isn't. Modern warfare is more outright lethal from the get-go, yes, but that's to make up for the fact it is incredibly easy to heal up and recover relative to what people suffered previously.
>>
>>153153163
They have passive shields that protect them from bullets and shrapnel. They can still use magic in the meantime.

You need a direct artillery hit or prolonged machine gun fire to break their shields by conventional means.
>>
>>153153377
They put their shields down to shoot. Also, only Tanya can last so long in such combat.
>>
>>153153414
>only Tanya can last so long
How many guys would it take to cum through Tanya's shield?
>>
>>153150881
>Basic wounds, even something as simple as a scratch from a dirty polearm, would fuck you to hell in previous wars.
Not really, people were actually really good at handling cut and stab wounds.
Bigger issues were really infectious diseases, which were cause of more death traditionally than the actual military deaths.

If you think warfare in terms of how likely you're to get killed by the enemy, the numbers are pretty low even during napoleonic times.
Little over 3% of british soldiers were killed in action.
To the french side, little over 7% were actually killed in action.

Now consider this to WW1 where a little over 44% of Romanian soldiers were killed in battle.
>>
>>153153414
You didn't read the original did you? And even in the anime it's obvious. Do you think Tanya and co. turned off their shields when shooting up the Dacian HQ?
>>
>>153153244
>gas based attacks
Aren't mages using breathing spell? If so, they can easily create some sort of magical protection from gas or use their speed to get out of danger zone quickly.
>exhaustion tactics
I don't know if you can dedicate so much manpower and other resources to try to exhaust the mages, especially when Empire is such a military moloch.
>anti-air
What was the maximum range of anti-aircraft guns during the late World War I and early 20's? Because these mages can easily achieve altitude of 8000 meters.

I believe the only way to defeat them is having godlike spy network who will provide you with information about their next target.

>but that's to make up for the fact it is incredibly easy to heal up and recover relative to what people suffered previously.
But the problem is that modern soldiers generally don't even get the to the field hospital.
Do you really think the combination of less dangerous weapons vs armor is more lethal than the combination of modern firearms vs no armor at all?
People didn't die a whole lot.

The only reason why you are confused, the only reason why you think modern war isn't dangerous, is that right now we are not having any real wars at all. When the US attack a nation like Libya, what kind of contest is that? There is no opposition there. The fatalities on the side of the Americans ore more due to accident than to the achievements of the enemy. If two opponents of similar strength faced each other, then you'd see some serious casualties. But you don't, because we have MAD, which is a promise of casualties on a completely different dimension.

There is also the fact that mages can't be mass produced. Tanya's Battalion is basically all that her country has managed to recruit in terms of powerful mages. The war isn't going to last long enough for another generation of mages to grow up. So even though they are attack helicopters, they couldn't replenish their numbers. Any losses are basically permanent.

Superweapons were more the domain of WW2 than WW1. But the lesson learned is that superweapons are not able to win against superior manufacturing capacity. Once the Empire pisses off enough nations, the country would be overwhelmed through sheer numbers.

In the end, the only Superweapon that worked was nuclear bombs.

Nuclear bombs only shortened a war that was already won, and it's not like they were the only way of wiping out 100000 people from enemy cities, regular firebombing raids can do the same since they were easier to mass produce. The nuke was more of a symbolic statement imho.

The improved nukes later and the capability of delivering them via missiles is where it became a real game changer.

The nuke was strong, but would probably still lose the same way against superior manufacturing capacity.
>>
>>153165958
>The nuke was strong, but would probably still lose the same way against superior manufacturing capacity.
Well what was true with nukes was true with Superweapons in general; in that nations with superior manufacturing capabilities are generally the ones to make the nukes. Remember that despite the Manhattan Project, America only built three nukes in time. One for testing and two for dropping. Nations that are in a disadvantage in manufacturing would not be able to build a functioning nuke before the war ended.

The Empire's only chance is knowing when they are ahead and quit with a peace treaty. But very few nations ever knew to do this in the entire human history.
>>
>>153165778

Tanya's battalion is the empire's hand picked elite, more could be trained up to replace lost members but it'd take time, far more than Tanya's boot camp for the ones she picked out, what I had in mind is if all the other nations all employed a similar force it'd limit the damage Tanya's force can achieve if they engaged her force and if she's stuck fighting at one front another would be devastated by the enemy without any strong means to repel a similar assault.
>>
>>153166038
Exactly, the bomb was simply too difficult to manufacture to actually turn the tide of war. Anyone with the capabilities of producing one could have achieved the same effect through conventional means. The only difference is the shock effect of doing that much destruction with a single weapon, and the uncertainty of how many are yet to come.

So I find it hard to say it's the only superweapon that worked, it's just that only the one who's already winning can even afford to have it.
>>
If the high command found out that Tanya prays before every attack she makes, would they consider her a dangerous fundamentalist?

Pretty much. Considering the emperor's authority was literally based on the belief that he is divinely chosen by god, it would be weird if they have much of a problem with superficial religious ceremonial phrases as long as the people do their job (which is exactly what she does).

>>
>>153166913
Her whole point is that she has no allegiance to anyone but herself. She only plays that part for as long as she finds it useful. If it became clear at some point that he high command wants her dead for political reasons, or at least has no intention of ever using her for anything other than a pawn to send to the front lines, and if she thinks she'd be better off deserting, she will probably do so without hesitation.

And judging by this, Tanya is a psychopath, not a sociopath.

I reckon launching a bomb filled with some toxic gas would do the trick in case you don't have your own mages. Shields don't protect against toxic gas, just launch a few bombs into the vicinity and the skies would basically become a death trap for anyone that wants to engage in high altitude air-to-ground warfare. The downside is that notGerman scientists would eventually find a way to counter this tactic, like gas masks, and you also risk contaminating ground units if you overdo it and some of the gas spreads to low altitude.
>>
>>153153114
> Shields though

>>
>>153170478
Gas only really works against ground units.
Wind currents at higher altitudes are much higher than lower to the ground, and aircraft are rather fast as well.
The amount of gas you'd have to put into the air to have any effect at all would be prohibitive. And they would likely just dodge it and attack somewhere else.

It's easier to just load your missile with standard explosives and pieces of metal. When it hits a wizard it's actually going to kill them before they kill you.
>people exposed to mustard agent rarely suffer immediate symptoms,
Even if you do manage to give them a high dose, they are still going to be at full combat capacity and kill the fuck out of you. And that's a pretty big if. As you just noted, the stuff is going to be blown away really quickly, and the range is abysmal, because it's just gas. It has shit inertia.

>Shrapnel
What has a higher velocity and mass, shrapnel or bullets? Because we just saw in the latest episode them tanking a volley of bullets at close range with no issue.
>>
>>153171426
>What has a higher velocity and mass, shrapnel or bullets?
Uh, the shape is almost irrelevant to the initial velocity. It's the kinetic energy behind the acceleration that makes them fast.
The more explosive material you use, the greater the kinetic energy.
And thus, bombs are more powerful than gunshots.
>>
>>153171519
What the hell are you talking about nobody was talking about the shape
And you're being imbecilic, sure E = 0.5*m*v^2 but the mass of a bullet is orders of magnitudes less than the mass of a bombshell, it's not at all certain shrapnel actually moves any faster
Shrapnel also doesn't have spin kinetic energy, and a lot of the energy is lost through a shockwave.

Well lets say artillery and canons. If mages have been able to blow shit up since time immemorial, would that have been a military development?

I mean castles would never have existed.

Probably not. Carlo didn't put in nearly as much thought into this setting as Yoshimune Kouki did for Muv-Luv Alternative (which is very realistic in spite of the mechas). He merely threw in the common elements to isekai into his World War I story.

Also, the biggest application of mage power seems to be levitating things, usually themselves. That's why "mages" for the most part fulfill the role of aerial snipers.

I think if this setting where more believable, rather than an extension of air power the defensive shield spells would be more focused on, because old time thinking was about checks/counters, and there was no hard counter for increasingly powerful and fast artillery.

What, what did they do?
>>
>>153172071
The stuff they are using to fly seems to be rather modern.
They are using guns for most of their attacks.

Mages would probably have played a role in the warfare of old, but since the mages are using tools, that means that without those tools they are less efficient.
>>
>>153172011
1. Don't do pearl harbor
2. Don't piss of the US

And basically everyone would have let you do whatever with china and Korea.

Best if you find oil somewhere in china or korea so you don't have to get squeezed by the US.
>>

>can't fathom how people can volunteer for elite suicide squad

>>
>>153172121
I honestly think the guns are just there to look cool. I mean wht are they even doing? The closest thing that comes to my mind is that the guns are literal guns, and when they cast magic, it;s the bullets that are becoming enchanted, shot out, and exploded.
>>
>>153172131
The US wanted to go to war. They were already supporting China against Japan before Pearl Harbor, and that's besides their general support of the allies.

They also have a history of sinking their own ships and blaming somebody for it in order to declare war.
>>
>>153172156
>I honestly think the guns are just there to look cool.
You don't burden fighters with heavy stuff just because it looks cool.
That's for parades, not for actual military action.
>>
>>153172214
Are guns are heavier but more wieldy than two meters of yggdrasil branch.
>>
>>153171999
The mages are using special gear to fly and they also need some sort of weapon (rifle, for example) to use their magic in the offensive.
So I would say that mages are rather new addition to this world armies and if not, their power was severely limited by technology.

They don't mention it but operation orbs that notGerman mages use are considered a breakthrough.
>>
>>153172246
It depends on how their magic works. Was it ever explained in the books?

Maybe it's only the projectile that a mage can use to make shit explode.I'l give you flying, but the weapon isn't that big a deal. sure a gun is better than a longbow, but a longbow with magic exploding bullets would do the same job
>>
>>153172316
>exploding bullets
Exploding arrows**

>>153172292
But other countries have mages. I assume the orb isn't widespread.
>>
>>153172316
Yes, but the point is, some people in this world were born with magic powers probably since the dawn of mankind, but in order to truly display your abilities you need some sort of energy amplified (like operational orb) and I don't think people had technology to create such thing until very recently. We can see that without this device mages are very limited. Frenchies are running out of energy after one artillery barrage, Swedes cannot create shields to protect themselves from Tanya's attacks and Tanya herself can't do much, except basic stuff like slowing her fall etc.
>>
Also, why do the germans have magic jetpacks? Isn't a magical vehicle like the other countries have better? More shit to carry for one.

Or does having a whole vehicle create a greater train on the magician than having a single jetpack boot?
>>
>>153172470
I see your point.
>>
>>153172487
>More shit to carry for one.
That's a negative, not a positive.
>>
>>153172346
>>153172316
Mages by themselves just channel mana and can use only a fraction of their power. Their abilities are provided by operation orbs or other tools that store the mage's mana and transform it into spells. Other great powers have their own mana amplifiers but as always German science is the best in the world.
>>
>>153172516
Surely the ability to carry more shit is a positive.
>>
>>153172551
>the ability
The ability is the same.
Buying a larger backpack doesn't make you stronger.
>>
>>153172576
But do we know if yo're carrying the backpack or if the backpack is carrying you? How do those faggy little magic mopeds work anyway?
>>
>>153172596
>do we know if yo're carrying the backpack or if the backpack is carrying you?
Because the backpack doesn't fly on its own. It only flies when you lift it up.

Cars can move around without a human present. All you have to do is put a weight onto the pedal.
Bikes can not move around on their own. No matter what kind of weight you put on the pedal. Only when the pedals are actually rotated regularly will the bike move.
>>
>>153172696
>Bikes can not move around on their own. No matter what kind of weight you put on the pedal. Only when the pedals are actually rotated regularly will the bike move
Unless they've got some kind of magic fuel that isn't pedal power.
>>
>>153172779
>Unless they've got some kind of magic fuel
Precisely the point. Cars come with fuel. Bikes do not. Bikes are tools to convert your own energy into forward motion.
The wizards' flying devices are much the same. They need magic fuel (provided by wizards) to lift off.
>>
>>153172813
Yeah but what if they aren't bikes but motorbikes? That's my point.
>>
>>153172833
Then you wouldn't need to be a wizard to ride one.

We know that wizards provide magical energy because the amount of power that Tanya can release was mentioned (as noteworthy) even in the anime.
We also know that wizards can make things fly because Tanya lifted fucking cutlery. I hope you are not suggesting that the cutlery was actually a miniature flying device designed by German scientists.
We know that it takes wizards to operate the flying devices.

Why is it so difficult for you to connect the dots?

Melatonin helps but we don't really know the best way to use it.

In the end the problem is the change in brain chemistry. And we just don't know enough about how to alter them safely. All the traditional sleeping medications are just ways to render you unconscious, but what is common to them all is that they generate bad quality sleep.

>And next you'll tell me that death will be cured.

It won't, because

1) Intelligence (which is 99% genetic) is dropping due to dysgenic ideologies like feminism.

2) Taxes go to banks, weapons, welfare instead of basic research (which is ever more expensive as all the low hanging fruit are already taken)

3) We're gonna spend the following decades in endless small-scale civil wars, urban conflict and general uncertainty.

This is entirely a very recent belief. And a belief that is restricted to the West. Asia had never considered immortality a bad thing, and that is because there wasn't a culture of promising a better life after death.

The West can't handle immortality because they had been taught that dying is a good thing, in order to accept what they can't change. Asia finds that mentality hilarious.

You are not up to date on biology, that argument is no longer true. And even those cells that don't regenerate can be reprogrammed. There is nothing physically impossible about it, it is just very difficult to do.
>>
>>153177546
>Is that why Asia never changes without a good kick from the outside world?
You seem to not realise that Western dominance is a relatively recent event. Guess you never checkout out how history was what it is.

Asia simply assumed that the afterlife sucks as much as real life. So there is no rush to drop dead.
>>
>>153177516
Of course intelligence is genetic, if it wasn't genetic, then other primates would be on the same technological level as us.
Genes are what maintain the differences between different organisms.

If Genes had no affect on intelligence, then you'd have plants that are equally intelligent as humans.

You're overestimating CRISPR massively. And I don't think I've read about immortal cells. Only some Cancer cells that had a lifespan of a thousand years or so but good luck reproducing that while keeping the functions of the cells intact.

You don't need immoral cells. You really are trying to fly before you can walk. You just need the cells to have their lifespan reset. Your mistake is thinking the only kind of immortal are those that are self sustaining. We have a society to support us, there is no need to make people live for millennia through a once-off treatment. We just need to occasionally pull people off of old age every few decades.

Fine. The reason Asia stopped paying attention to the rest of the world was because Asia was literally more advanced in every way. Asians had superior quality of life than Europe, who were living under primitive and unhygienic conditions for most of their history. Asia had nothing to learn from Europe for thousands of years.
>>
>>153177852
To add to that, there is the belief that "white men" are simply superior, which was a lie invented during the Colonial period. There was a complete deletion of facts in how behind technologically Europe was, because it was inconvenient to the racial superiority narrative.
