Gateway is what gets new people into anime. Haruhi is too entrenched in "anime culture" to attract someone unfamiliar with anime. But anybody with a small understanding of "anime culture" would enjoy Haruhi a lot and probably want to see more of the medium.

Actual gateway anime are things like Naruto, Shingeki no Kyojin, Code Geass, etc. Typically things even normalfags consider to be "cool".

I think that labeling Code geass, Naruto, DBZ, SAO and all those really popular shows as gateway would be inaccurate, since the term is more to describe an specific type of show than to just name popular stuff.

In my opinion, Gateway anime is something like Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Berserk, Monster, Kaiji and Satoshi Kon films, which are all excelent works in my opinion, but the thing is that they are extremely easy to introduce to normalfags since they don't carry most of the tropes that the medium is known for and are also more ''grounded'' than your average anime, while also being easy to get into considering they have engaging plots and narratives.
