Most if not all battle harems including the one in the OP are shit.

Some are less shit than others, but I hate how people defend Rakudai. The MC is overpowered as fuck, but in the same way that Batman is still relevant in a universe that contains Superman. Except that in Rakudai, everyone pretends that being Batman automatically makes you shit because you can't fly around like superman.

I watched a lot of these shows somehow. Let's see how many I can even remember.


Invaders of the Rokurobi has all the harem girls living in a one room apartment with the main character. Each is an alien or magical girl or something.

Date a Live was mostly bad, owing to the fagot Shido, but I really liked Tokisaki Kurumi's arc. Everything from the battles to the girl herself were incredible.

Sekirei was overall solid with really consistent animation.

Campione had a more interesting mythos than you'd normally expect, plus the main guy actually got lewd with his favorite girl

Rosario to Vampire anime was utter shit, but the manga became unique and completely fucking insane, with both the main guy AND main girl having alternate personalities who they couldn't control while the scope of the story just keeps ramping up every time you thought the entire world was involved. The main guy becomes a zombie and saves the world from a skyscraper-sized toad, and that's before it even gets crazy. There are plenty of bad chapters but it's like nothing else I ever read. I know it's not a LN adaption but it's still the genre you're looking for.

Also the tournament style fights are really grating. I love the DxD and T7 cast, and I think that's the more important part in battle harems.

There are obviously multiple reasons, but I think a major one is that the author is under pressure to make the girl fit the "main girl prototype", because of his own interpretation of the readers expectations and sometimes of the actual pressure from his editor. This results in boring generic girls. On the other hand the author has more freedom when he writes side characters so he can put more of his soul (and fetishes) into them, and they come as more genuine and likeable characters.

I welcome the change since I read more manga and LNs than I watch anime, which I assume is pretty normal here as there's some 30+ anime every season and not even a third of them is good, while there's enough manga out there to bury the Library of Congress.

I love manga but I don't understand people who read more than a handful of light novels, they're mostly pseudo-manga scenario that can only shine if well-adapted into manga or anime. Maybe I can understand if you read them in Japanese but not in English as most of them have terrible fan translations.
I like anime and manga because they are visual media. And I like "bad" anime like battle harems mostly despite the shitty designs, characters and writing, not because of them.
If I want to bother reading a book I prefer to read an actually good classic novel as there's a fuckload of them instead of some fiction for teenagers.

That is, if you have access to untranslated manga. If not it's much more plausible.

I've read DxD, Shinmai Maou, Hagure Yuusha, Rakudai, Blade Dance, Magika, Mahouka, HxH , IS as far as they've been translated, several unfortunately were dropped by translators.

What else out there is like Shinmai or Hagure with the detailed /e/ scenes, sometimes /h/ scenes. Basically R-18 scenes

I think people give Rakudai a pass because he MC is "alpha" and he dates a girl from early on in the story. Even though pretty much everything else about it is pretty terrible and even the MC & heroine aren't particularly likeable outside of those things I mentioned.

Hell it's exactly a case of "MC actually has the most overpowered ability/is a special snowflake" dressed up as him being weak and having to work hard that people on here make fun of yet tolerate in this series.

All the girls are surprisingly entertaining characters and competent fighters. The slice of life scenes are fun. Basara is one of the few "overpowered as fuck" MC's done right. The borderline H scenes and the actual sex is just icing on the cake.
