It has a lot more of CGI, filters, effects and better colors, gives the impression of something different and expensive more than takemoto's simple animation. Better visual direction too, like the different filters in a couple of PW episodes, or those colors and camera angles in Hibike S2.

All the conflicts and issues in ishihara's shows are mostly there too in the source so it's not hard to figure out character motivations and personality. Meanwhile if it weren't for LN readers I wouldn't ever know that kanie was a failed child artist who was really shat on by his mother, which is why he stays away from her, and he at some point considered burning the fucking stadium.

Ishihara doesn't shy from the good and bad things, he has it all, romance, tragedy, comedy, edgy etc.
Meanwhile takemoto seems to focus only on comedies most of the time. I know Amagi had a couple of emotional scenes but I wouldn't count it as much more than chuuni or hibike.

And yes, I know that takemoto directed Hyouka, but it was a far cry from his subsequent works. I guess drawing muscle boys fucks up your brains. Not that I don't like him, just my preferences are different.

You can't deny that Maidragon is more competently structured and its character dynamics are far more interesting. PW might be better on a technical level but that's about it. PW being shit probably wasn't even Ishihara's fault. I blame whoever was the series compositor for the show.

Mai is a girl who's parents died when she was young so she had to live and provide for herself, that's why she and Haruhiko are like family to each other. She's very kind and mature, or at least she tries to be since she still has outbursts where she acts childish. Despite being affable on the outside she also has a strong temperament and is prone to making snide remarks. She is also a bit tomboyish in mannerisms and interests. Those are some of her more common traits.

Despite being a lively tomboy, she is also very sisterly which shows when she took care of a young Haruhiko. That's a big part some people along with Japanese fans like her, since they see a teenage girl fullfulling the role of a mother as appealing and unique. She breaks the mold of some characters you see in anime, since even though she is the MC's childhood friend she is not romantically interested in him (for the most part) and mostly sees him as a younger brother. Also, even though she is a loner, she is very social and affable and she didn't have a single friend outside of Haruhiko which again goes against the lone wolf mold (see Koito).

If you watched the show you'll know she got the most screentime and conseuquently the most development and characterization out of all the girls in the show.
