It was. At the time we made the original contract, it was profitable. However markets fluctuate and the cost of business changes. The contract however stays constant. They weren't open to renegotiation so we ended up dropping the contract at the first opportunity. Most people I've talked to about Japanese export have said the same thing, it's not really worth the effort. If it's anything like Australia, lesser quality is sold locally to independents or sold to canneries for preserves. The cheapest stuff is always going to come from close by because of low transport costs. Added benefit is that it's usually pretty fresh too. I know nothing about Japanese farming though.

On average I would say you get apartments at a more reasonable price in Tokyo than you do in most other capital cities.
