They fucked the scene where he was supposed to confess to Rem after the whale fight, and cut out the ending of arc 3, plus skipped on foreshadowing and character quirks because of tight schedule.

Rem was supposed to be much more of a creeper, who points out his flaws, and Emilia more of stubborn girl. Also missed a bunch of Subaru's internal monologues that would give us some insight on what he was thinking at the moment which would make some things more tolerable, or understandable.

Well, there's the overall plot. The fact Subaru is not the only person from earth in that world, the helmet dude, Al is also from earth,, we were supposed to see a scene where after Subaru is killed by Julius, he goes into a dark realm and speaks to the voice of Satella, thinking about how much he wants to reach out to her and love her, and a bunch of other things.

The anime was rushed as fuck since it was working with 9 whole volumes for 25 episodes. They even cut out the ending.

I'm not going to exaggerate anything or call it amazing, but I find there are two things that Re:Zero does that are worthwhile.

Firstly, it uses mystery quite well. Not in the sense of a mystery to be solved, but in that it places the MC in a position of ignorance while slowly seeding in various concepts that will come up. The second thing it does is explore characters indepth from multiple angles, where characters who initially seem to be side-characters turn out to be the most vital part of the solution. In comparison, the action scenes don't sell any of it. They set up a threat, but they're not what the audience is there for.

The problem with the anime is that it cuts out too much internal monologue and character scenes, and cuts out too many of the hints of greater mysteries that make everything that's happening feel like part of something incomprehensibly larger.

He's exaggerating a little. You know her final scene in the anime, with Rem crying and begging Subaru not to throw her away? The original version has Subaru being the one in tears. Rem shielded him from the shockwave when the tree fell, and Subaru thinks she's dying. Rem decides to milk the scene for all it's worth, and and gets Subaru to confess to her while he's in tears and begging her not to die.

Her body goes limp as the life fades from her, or so it seems. She snaps right back up, and more or less tells him "It was just a prank bro, but no take backs". Subaru thinks he should be mad at at her, but ends up wanting to kiss her instead.

Then the cat faggot interrupts. Rem gets sent off, and gets her mind eaten ten minutes later as two other, much more powerful, Archbishops of the Witch Cult decide they want to make life worse for everyone. She's in a coma now, though Subaru still visits and talks to her whenever he has the time. Latest Arc of the WN is Subaru tracking down the first lead he's gotten on how to fix her.

So what's the best way to experience this? Kind of liked the anime but only got up until episode 12, so I wouldn't mind going back through the story up until then either with the LN or WN. Are either of those translated into English yet?

The guy who was translating Arc 3 ended up stopping because it was eating up all of his free time, though I'd still recommend reading that he's got. There are a bunch of sidestories translated in various places. The manga has some details the Anime cut, but the detail is still clearly not as complete as the WN.

However, this needs to be noted now. Anime Rem cuts out a lot of her personality in the second half. The WN version is much more assertive and cunning.

There was a literal chapter of Subaru reflection that went into that actually, which is good news. Also, its been explained Subaru's jealousy as something odd in regards to Emilia and his actions during the King Canidacy, which also included Rem's odd behavior as well, since she would normally be manhandling Subaru in that situation than letting him go. But it basically consisted of clown plots marionetting Rem/Subaru/Emilia, a "dark hand" grappling Subaru's heart, and Al being from the same world as Subaru, with the clown plot being spoilers so I won't explain further. Not to mention they even cut out a bunch of scenes during the king's selection that heavily involved Roswaal being villainous as fuck.
