I've seen a lot of sports series but I definitely got tired of the typical High School competition superpowered underdog stories that are almost the only sport series we got after 2010. YoI is unlike any stereotypical sports anime because it focuses on someone who is already a professional dealing with anxiety instead of winning the interhigh or getting to Koshien. YoI made figure skating interesting while Kuroko made basketball look ridiculous.

It's a sports anime passion project with a lot of research put into the sport and real love for it by the creators, and also has an interesting, realistic mc and a relatively well-developed romance that actually managed to keep surprising the viewer as the series progressed.

I personally also really like how the show intertwines itself with the actual real world. For example the characters compete in irl competitions, the locations, outfits, characters and choreographies are heavily based on irl stuff and some irl contemporary world-class athletes are animated into the show - and actually even voice themselves, commenting on the characters.
I haven't seen an anime tangle itself with the real-time real world like that before. It's interesting.

But in the end, it's just a question of taste, people like different things.
