I prefer bad guy isn't actually all that bad but tragically dies in a fight against the MC despite knowing his boss is evil/double crossed him because of Noblesse Oblige.

im a sucker for villains and antagonists , so seeing the villain do his shtick vs another common foe is cooler than just killing them desu, although often they just become jobbers and an easy way of setting up the new villain

sure, so?
The beastmen all the way up to Lordgenome were both villains and antagonists simulataneously in the first half
Plus nobody mentioned the word "villain"

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was pointing out your misuse of the word.

>Plus nobody mentioned the word "villain"
You were discussing whether Viral was a bad guy.
>>
>>153042129
I firmly believe that the majority of actionshit can be objectively assessed by the quality of their antagonists.

More specifically, antagonists with their own motivations and goals that just happen to conflict with the main cast will always make a show great, where as shows with antagonists who are evil for the sake of being evil or simple foils to the protagonist make actionshit shows boring as fuck.

>People try to accept muslims (villains) as friends
>they turn out to be murderous villains all along and backstab people who accepted them
>it's due to a crazy religion and the followers can't be reasoned with
>they need to be stopped somehow but the media brainwashes half the country into thinking the villains are peaceful
>there is unrest within the population of the country over this issue
>heroes rise up and embark on an adventure to expose the truth about these villains to the world
This is an anime plot alright.

>>153042269
As I understand understand it, "bad guy" is just a childish term vaguely alluding to both villain and antagonist without explicitly refering to one while excluding the other. I definitely don't think it's worth a semantics argument over, at least.

>"bad guy" is just a childish term vaguely alluding to both villain and antagonist
For one, I disagree. But sure, we don't need a discussion of semantics. For another, this is quite frankly some hard back-paddling on your part.
If you weren't using "bad guy" to mean villain - ie actually BAD guy - then your original post makes no sense whatsoever.
>>
The reason this stuff is good is because "bad guys" are the only ones who are interesting. The main character is usually bland shit who spends his time whining (especially true for the first half of TTGL) OR genki naive idiot that pulls through anyways because plot armour. Antagonists meanwhile rarely have the benefit of plot armour, have actual struggles, and usually don't win.

>The main character is usually bland shit who spends his time whining (especially true for the first half of TTGL) OR genki naive idiot that pulls through anyways because plot armour.

But even if this isn't the case a fuck ton of the time the protagonist is still elss interesting than everyone else.

Why is that so?

How are you supposed to self insert if the MC has too much personality?
>>
>>153042621
Stuck in the MC-format. He has to stay tame in personality because he has to pander to a large crowd and strong personality traits will alienate viewers who don't share said traits.

He's also stuck as the common good guy archetype. He may be a jerk sometimes but is always "good". He'll never have complex morality that viewers may not share. The normalfag idea of "good" is very limiting and narrow.
>>
>>153042621
I think its just a matter of making the lead as relatable as possible. You see this all the time in shows with a younger intended audience, like a lot of super robot mecha (including TTGL).
You can also make the antagonist much more tragic without bringing the show's overall mood down.

It's not backpedalling, I did indeed mean, as I said, that Viral, Lordgenome and the beastmen were indeed villains, and they are also antagonists. "Villain" and "antagonist" are not so far removed from one another that they are contradictory.
>>
>>153043907
>responding to post saying Viral is more of a rival than a bad guy
>>bad guy meaning antagonist (to you)
That would make rival and bad guy synonyms. From this point forward your post is dumb.
>arguing that Viral is an antagonist because he shares values with somebody else
And this is where you are clearly talking about a moral dimension.

Stop making cheap excuses and accept that you were wrong.

>>
>>153044043
>That would make rival and bad guy synonyms.
literally how the fuck?
>arguing that Viral is an antagonist because he shares values with somebody else
No, I'm stating that a character who acts antagonistically to the main character is an antagonist. That's just the definition of antagonist. My original post was questioning why that guy thought that just because Viral was a rival character, didn't also mean he was a bad guy. Because he both of those things.
>And this is where you are clearly talking about a moral dimension.
To imply that anyone is "bad" is to inherently involve a moral dimension, that's why I described "bad guy" as a childish term because to label anyone as objectively good or bad is a black-and-white worldview that children most often utilize to wrap their heads around conflicts. There's nothing wrong with the term "bad guy" as long as you don't take it too seriously, which you somehow have.
I can't keep arguing with someone with such a complete lack of reading comprehension, because all I am doing is re-explaining myself to you over and over again as you misrepresent what I'm saying in wildly creative ways.
>>
>>153044336
>literally how the fuck?
Use a dictionary. And context.

>No, I'm stating that a character who acts antagonistically to the main character is an antagonist.
While talking about values, which has nothing to do with that.

>To imply that anyone is "bad" is to inherently involve a moral dimension,
Thank you for accepting that you were wrong.

>I can't keep arguing
I can see that. You fail at it badly.
>>
>>153042937
I actually thought that it was what made the show good. It was so fucking slow and somewhat boring before they killed off Kamina. I really respected their decision to just go ahead and kill him.
>>
>>153044505
It did feel like it meandered a bit up till episode 8, and up to episode 16 the show became pretty good then slowed down a lot again after the timeskip for some reason, and then killed off all the fun characters.
>>
I love it so much
Bad guys being actually good all along is just perfect.
>>
how about trope about good guy turned into bad guy? MC whole fully believed his ideals which turned nothing more than delusion and when reality starts kicks in he resent everything he stands for
