After having not consumed any EVA media aside from an episode here and there at 3 AM on toonami as a kid which I didn't remeber anything of beyond the OP; and being mostly unspoiled (I knew kaworu wasn't human, that EVA's weren't robots, and about the masturbation scene/CONGRATULATIONS but that's it). I watched 1-20, 21', 22', 23', 24', 25, 26, and EoE recently.

- Rei is shit, she lacks any sort of personality and may as well not be human and of course turned out not to be anyways
- Asuka is shit, she's a bitch with serious mental issues. She barely even qualifies as Tsundere, if anything, she's fucking Yandere, and not in a good way.
- Misato is bad, but not shit. Like Asuka, she's got serious mental issues, but not as bad and she's actually nice and not a bitch. But she's not waifu material
- Shinji is shit, he's got all the same mental issues Asuka does, but is just self loathing and depressed instead of hostile and aggressive.
- Kaworu is shit at first glance but secrerly great. At first glance, he would seem as emotionally out there as rei, just overly postive and into you instead of disinterested, which would get akward and annoying, and he's not as cute as the others. But he'd also be a huge bro to talk to about stuff like anime and vidya since he's super into human stuff intellectually it'd be a great relationship even if emotionally/sex wise it wouldn't be great.

The Eva fans clearly have problems with their perception of what Eva in general is, and the western fans especially don't understand how romance is perceived in Japan. They fail to understand how Anno shows you comparison between a person's ideal partner and what that partner in reality is and how the obsession with escapist is ideal can destroy and disappoint you one day. We have Shinji and Asuka, two individuals who perceive love in deifferent ways, their perception is built upon the walls they encaged themselves in. Asuka sees love as a bit of a competition, stalking Kaji as a "perfect" male to show how mature she is, but at the same time she genuinely wants to be loved by him and Shinji. Both men are so full of themselves, they can't provide her with that. Shinji is her exact copy with different exterior and Kaji simply sees her in a different way. This, of course, strikes both her exterior pride and interior need for intimacy with others. Shinji sees love as someone being "nice" to him, someone caring about him and telling him he is loved and needed. That's his exterior, he never would try to approach someone unless this someone did it first. But Shinji's problem is that he's so desperate for affection (as Asuka put it, "anyone would do") he fails to try to understand others. Specifically Kaworu. When Kaworu tries to fulfill his destiny, Shinji accuses him of betrayal, comparing him to his father. He fails to understand both Gendo and Kaworu and sees them as sources of love and affection, he pilots the Eva, because he wants to be praised and needed by his father, but he didn't even try to understand why his father left him in the first place. Same with Kaworu, he wants to hear the confessions and nice words, but doesn't try to understand who Kaworu is and why he suddenly says it all to him. Shinji saw Kaworu and his father as ideals and when his ideals turn out to be humans with their own needs and fears, he freaks out.

I disliked Asuka right up until EoE, when I finally understood her character.

She is something akin to the human spirit, fierce resolve and even explosive anger in death. Her character is being genuine to a fault, she cries, she rages, she expresses her truth and herself. That's what her interactions with Shinji were about, they may have been a dance of misunderstandings, but Asuka's ruthlessness itself was candor, she wants Shinji to want her, and only her.
