Depends on your interpretation. I see it as his acceptance of Instrumentality. When the walls shatter it is his dissolution of his AT field as he joins the rest of humanity in the collective.

One of the major points of Eva is the Hedgehog's Dilemma, that you can't get close to others without hurting them and being hurt in return. AT Fields are the metaphorical (and in Eva also literal) barriers we erect to protect ourselves from being hurt. Instrumentality dissolves the AT Fields holding the physical form together so we return to being LCL (Which is the blood of Lilith). In that form humanity can form that collective without physical form or individuality so no one will be hurt or suffer.

This theory of course only holds up in the context of the TV series and is not compatible with the movies. My position is that the TV series are different continuities, as far as I can tell the movies scuttled the last two episodes.

I prefer the TV ending in alot of ways because we finally see a resolution to Shinji's character growth.

My read is that Asuka became a representative for everyone who had ever caused Shinji pain. A major theme in the show is how an individual's identity is determined by the relationship they have with other people. Since most of Shinji's relationships in the show are negative, he comes to the conclusion that he is worthless. As a side not, Shinji and Asuka don't come back to "life" at the same time, though the film presents it that way. The script says that Shinji was on the beach for at least a week before Asuka reemerged from the ocean, though this isn't shown. Because Shinji had all that time sitting alone in the middle of a literal hellscape, he might have become resentful towards everyone and everything. So once Asuka appears, he is overcome with this anger at everyone who caused Third Impact and chokes her. There's also some Hegelian subject/object stuff in there too but I don't know enough Hegel

"ONE MORE FINAL: I Need You" is the English title of episode 26', not the title of an addendum to the rest of EoE; the final scene is a part of episode 26', not an addendum

also, the Japanese title of episode 26' is often mistranslated by fans it seems like- literally translated it's 'My Purest Heart For You', yes, but translated properly what it actually says is simply "Sincerely Yours", as in signing off on a letter- the Japanese title for the movie adaptation of Flowers For Algernon
