As to why the series is so popular, it came out when zombies in media were extremely popular or at the very least rode on the coattails of that fad. It had likable consistent characters. It was full of non-stop action and fat fuggin tiddies all over the place. It also had decent world building in that it explored a few aspects of how society would deal with a zombie apocalypse that hadn't been seen (or at least commonly seen) before in other media.

Calling it overrated is bullshit bait. It's by no means a masterpiece but I'd definitely call it a modern classic simply because of the unique and for the most part enjoyable experience it provides to so many people, including a lot of people who don't go out of their way to watch ecchi shows.

Also it gave us this scene, truly the pinnacle of animated breast physics. What started in the 80's reached it's point here and we've been on a steady decline since.

I wish it actually did more standard zombie apocalypse genre activities. Searching for a stronghold, cleaning it out, fortifying it, raiding nearby areas for supplies, building a successful community and slowly retaking their little corner of the city.
