There are more reasons why it's stupid. We'll put aside the fact Sakura likes Sasuke; that's a big deal but not necessarily a decisive factor when characters can change. The thing is part of Naruto's development is his growing out of his crush on Sakura. He accepts that Sakura likes Sasuke, not him. He respects her feelings as he comes to respect her more as a person, his friend and his teammate.

Hell, Naruto respected Sakura more than she respected either of them. That's what his response to the fake confession showed. He rebuffed her for being misguided in thinking he was chasing Sasuke only for her sake, but he would not tolerate her lying to herself. And while pursuing Sasuke was just for her, he had practically become a shipper for those two. Naruto wanted a happy ending; he wanted to bring his buttbuddy back and for those two to be together.
