Rayearth is almost proto-evangelion. It deserves way more credit than it gets, but the by the numbers RPG parody and comparisons to the titanic popularity of sailor moon at the time dimmed it's reputation a bit. However, for the show being the Eva before Eva was Eva the elements are all there, at least in the second season. The encroaching end of the world, the self loathing main character, the giant robot battles against supernatural forces. Underrated show.

Hard to believe Hikaru's voice is the Robot making girl in SYD who's obsessed with dildos and vibrators.

They're more or less stuck as cardboard cutouts while the main girl starts having some sort of middle-aged-14-year-old crisis with an evil counterpart of hers who is at the same time herself and her daughter in a manner of speaking but that ultimately is only a pastiche of the earlier anime series the director worked on, which is his baby and he didn't manage to get it off the ground.

Is the manga or anime better? Or is it just a matter of taste? I don't know how you manage to stretch 49 episodes out of a six volume series, but I guess Cardcaptor Sakura did the same thing and I thought it was better for it.
