I've also seen a lot of "craft beer" at convenience stores too, with different brews by the familiar brands in each shop. Not much difference, but sometimes you get a weird can that has an appreciable difference from the standard.

Actual craft brewing is something you kinda have to go out of the way to get. For example a bar in Sapporo had a pale on that was conditioned with agarwood chips... but if it weren't for the insistence of a friend I'd have never known about the place.

Yoichi was absolutely divine before they stopped doing age statements due to a lack of barrels laid down 12-20 years ago.Their NAS are younger on average now than they used to be, and the flavors just aren't the same. Nikka owns Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, and so their cask blend draws on the same fresh peat you got from Yoichi single malts. The answer is this, but it's kinda patchy. Newer machines have ID scanners, but alcohol vending machines are slowly disappearing due to 24-hour convienence stores.

However, it's VERY rare to get carded, even if someone looks underage. The primary reason is it could embarrass someone, which is of course a taboo in Japan. So it's all on an honor system.

Which one did you try? I'd tell you to try to get your hands on a Westvleteren 12, but it's extremely hard to get outside of Belgium. My personal favourites are the Rochefort 10, Chimay blue cap, and the Orval one, but they may be hard to find in certain areas.
