That's mostly because she was fighting other teenagers 3/4 of the time, I imagine if they were monsters like in EVA, she'd have no problem, but as it is, the only one she could have killed with a totally clear conscience is Nui, and the writers didn't even give her that after all she'd been through.

To be honest, it's not like Ryuuko didn't make a real attempt to kill her mother,she and her sister had no idea their double attack on her,that split her in two, wasn't a fatal strike and when Ryuuko went edgy she really was trying to kill Nui and flashed a psycho looking grin thinking her stabbed to the heart was enough to kill her.

Ryuuko definitely has it in her to kill someone far more than Shinji does, If Shinji were to kill someone it'd be in a haze of frustation,lust, anger and hatred.

Sure, but Ragyou isn't fully human either, and by the finale's fight, she's even less so. Ryuuko only bothers to try and bring her in peacefully once the life fibers had been destroyed and when Ragyou had lost all her defenses.

I never got why people hate Shinji so much.
When I first watched I remember going in thinking that he would be the worst ever, but he was all right for most of the time.
He was reserved and stuff and didn't like fighting, but he still did his job most of the time. The only time I remember hime leaving was the time they forced him to kill/defeat Touji who was inside some possesed Eva and that was perfectly understandable.
Touji was a good friend for the most part and I would be fed up with Gendo's and nerv's bullshit too after that.
Despite that he still goes back to help them when they are in trouble.
Him jacking off to Asuka's comatose body was weird, but except for that he was allright most of the time.
