No he is not a gary stu. He isnt a perfect boy with superficial flaws. He isn't a human. First of all he has white hair in a series where nobody has weird hair colors. The only people having white hair are old people and as they happen to be in kaiji and akagi, they are almost demonlike people with no remorse. White hair indicates he is a supernatural creature. Akagi came in the parlor after the guy begged for someone to save him, even if it was a devil. Then akagi came in. Then he basically shows himself as someone who only exists to make other people lose, not to win. Like some kind of spirit that is tehre to screw people over. This is further pushed by the fact he wants people to gamble with all their worth.

He doesn't not lose because he is a perfect boy, he doesn't not lose because he is a gary stu that is good at mahjong and beats all those bad guys. He wins if someone falters in the face of complete destruction. He teaches people humility. But unlike a good guy his payment is everything.

Wanting akagi to lose is like wanting a calculator to make a mistake.

I'm not terribly inclined to disagree, but I'd say Akagi is in the end a human, much as he wished he wasn't. The entire ending of Ten is basically him coming to terms with that but also leaving on his own terms as well, along with discussing and considering the feelings of those close to him.

I can very easily see the Akagi of Akagi becoming the Akagi from Ten. Time affects all things, even demons.

I always saw Akagi as a person who always wanted to live his life to the fullest.
As young he only felt alive when his life was at risk, and I assume something changed once he beat Washizu.

When he's old it seems more like he finally found out how to live his life to the fullest, which was mostly to be himself. His ego became his most important part of living, which is why the ending is so god damn tragic.

Young akagi killed a yakuza kingpin and became a legend in the mahjong world. With no bigger challenge he quit.

After that nothing he did really mattered, and he had to find enjoyment in the small things.

Its like when you see an actor in an old movie. You look them up online and you see some old man who has long lost his luster. Akagi is just like that. A legend who had a short moment where he could relive his glory days. But instead of a mansion where all chips were on the table it was in a back room of some yakuza who only gambled who could organise mahjong.

Despite this being the slowest shit of all time, I read every chapter as they came out after catching up.

The pacing was slow, but unlike other Nameks I always got some enjoyment from the chapters and was excited to read further.
