There was never anything that could please Macross fans. Macross doesn't have solid monotonous fanbase. Every show is so different, like for example Plus and 0 are so serious, while 7 is so silly. Then we have Frontier and Delta with idols and cute girls. It tries to live on the verge of two usually conflicting fanbases of mechafags and moe/idolfags. Some people like Macross purely for planes, others for romance and music. If you make another Froniter you will displease fans of gritty war drama, if you do another Plus you will displease idolfags. Make another 7 and you will anger everyone.

It doesn't matter what next Macros will be about. People will complain about it a lot.

The story being weak is the fault of the writers. Take it up with them. In hindsight though, Delta was pure fun, silly, and with some seriousness as if the writers decided to mess around and enjoy themselves. An experiment using a few concepts that differed from the norm so to speak. If they do follow moving away from tradition again, perhaps the second time will be better.
