Having a single protagonist is absolutely not the issue. It worked perfectly fine in Amagami.
Also, it's easier to identify with the protagonist when you spend more time in his shoes, getting someone new as the protagonist every arc wouldn't work as well.

The problem here is that the ending was so bad that it literally overshadows the rest of the show. Even if the other arcs turn out good, I don't think the show will be able to recover.

This ending was a completely new dimension of bad. Rihoko's ending was great by comparison.

The episode itself isn't all that bad. It's good even, if you ignore the last few minutes where they take a huge dump over everything.

Essentially the episode concludes with them being on a good way to starting a relationship. After they kissed at the near end of the episode I was certain it would be a good end. Then the MC confesses to Tsuneki and out of fucking nowhere she decides that she can't date him because she has become serious about wanting to become a chef after he complimented her cooking skills. She says she can't half-ass things, so she doesn't want to date him in the remaining year in school either. The result is that they completely stop talking to each other for the next five years where Tsuneki has gone to Spain to become a chef while Shouichi has studied nutritional sciences at university. Shouichi works part-time in the restaurant where Tsuneki helped out in the past and the owner tells him that they're going to get a new chef who then shows up and turns out to be Tsuneki. The end.
