I really liked the dynamic between him and danzo. Danzo was too focused on always seeing everything as a choice between the lesser of two evils with the end justifying any means necesdary, while Hiruzen was way too idealistic trying to take the path of least conflict and hoping things would eventually work out.

I feel like madara and hashirama really had it almost write but kishi wrote himself into a corner and needed a quick reason for why the hokage kept fucking up.

He tried talking to them but nothing worked out. On top of that his Senju based council urged him not to give into their political plans and he chose to let Danzo handle it. Honestly, he really did make the mistake of not letting Sasuke's dad be the 5th Hokage since he was reported to be as strong as the 4th

He was old and past his prime. The man was like 60 when the attack happened. There's also barely any Kage in history that can handle the stronger tailed beasts like Kurama and Hachi unless they have godlike chakra (Hashirama) or an impregnable defense (3rd Raikage)

Danzo wanted to protect the village no matter the costs. He was a slightly shadier Tobirama and everyone respected Tobirama

He wanted to keep the nine tails jinchuriki hidden. You can't do that if everyone in the village knows the 4th Hokage's son is the jinchuriki. It would have been as dentrimental to Naruto's upbringing as how he grew up alone in the series.
