The ending with March is similar to what happened to the guy in the first chapter. He started imagining a happy ending where he went to the place where his village went. March started imagining a future where she becomes a mom and is with her family but she noticed there is something wrong so I'm curious to what's gonna happen to her.

Funny enough, i think they're gonna have the whole romeo and juliet situation, where the sister killed herself because she thought march died, but in the end, from how i interpreted the ending, march seems to have woken up from the illusion that she died.

What was the point of the human sacrifice subplot anyway? What I got was that the ritual had always existed, but when the Yanome showed up they set themselves up as its administrators, in order to steal the Ninanna's land. But how? You can't drive a people to extinction by taking one girl every year...

Someone started it long ago maybe because they saw the spirit bear (assuming it was alive, but the reason is actually irrelevant) and doing the ritual kept the villagers at ease, they thought with that they could be free from any monster around (if that was the case or not is also irrelevant), then the Yanome come along and start taking care of it, in a way, the Yanome now have the villagers in their hands since they conduct the ritual that decides if they are attacked or not, they don't care about killing the girls.
They could even skip killing the girls and just take them as slaves but then they could maybe escape like what happened here, or they just aren't that kind of people, another reason could be that they knew about the spirit bear and fed it girls from the village knowing that'd stop it. Depending on how long they have been there (and assuming the spirit bear was alive long ago), the original Yanome might have known about it but since time passed the older generations started seeing that as a legend but kept the ritual going to keep control.
Basically the point was, "villagers are still uncultured and easily manipulated and controlled".
