I read all the LNs after watching the series. I was very disappointed. He sucks at writing. KyoAni saw a good premise that was executed poorly, and proceeded to execute it correctly. The anime is the only reason Haruhi became a hit.

I thought the light novels got better as they went along. Just the overall flow and way they were written got way more natural as you went on.
I think the story jumped the shark when the split timeline bullshit happened
but it still improved as time went on imo

This is why every writer should have the ending on mind whenever they write a story. You simply can't write what's not come into your mind.

I personally can't see how Haruhi series could end. Kyon relief himself to attend to Haruhi the rest of his life? Haruhi lost her power so Kyon can finally make human out of Yuki? Kyon become time police together with Mikuru? Or become gay with Koizumi and destroying the world as result?

The story has no direction at all, and now Tanigawa lost his way and all we got is a dead series.
