I don't really think that's accurate, timing is a contributing factor but even half a year from now I could imagine YOI winning by a landslide. YOI had the most centralized fanbase (tumblr, unfortunately) because that's where the majority of female anime fans go. They could spread the word about voting more effectively, while male anime fans are more split between /a/, reddit, narutoforums, whatever. It also attracted significantly more normies than usual, who wouldn't watch any other series and would give YOI their vote by default.
