Then he'll be posting all of the happy celebration fanart. Anyhow, since this is a Rem thread, I thought I might as well try discussing Rem.

I noticed the sidestories seem to give Rem a sort of mini-character arc about understanding Subaru. She's not sure if he actually trusts her in "The Best Day of Rem's Life", and takes one of his jokes literally in the mayo chapters. These are chronologically the earliest stories. At this point, Rem doesn't really seem to get him. However, the later stories show her increasingly taking advantage of his habits, and she's able to read and manipulate him quite readily by the time Arc 3 hits. I kind of get the feeling that getting scolded for the mayo incident was the turning point here.

On another tangent, there's an impression I get that many of the expectations Subaru had for Emilia ended up getting transferred to Rem, including his spaz attacks about how he'd be all alone in the world if he didn't have Emilia. That side of his feelings now seems directed towards Rem. When considering the possibility of alternate universes, he doesn't worry about how the Emilia he's saved might not be his Emilia. Rather, he worries that the Rem he saves might not be his Rem.

For better or worse, Rem is now the girl he feels he can't live without, that he expects to understand him, and that he spergs out over. The "for worse" possibility being there because many of Subaru's sins now seem more anchored to Rem than anyone else. She helped him make better use of his Sloth, his Greed is rooted in the concept of being Rem's hero, his Wrath towards the Witch Cult is mostly for Rem, we've seen how his Lust was reflected, and I'm willing to bet his Gluttony will be tied to his need for human warmth that he expects from Rem.

Well, that aspect seems to be being rewritten in the LNs. However, I saw a Q&A where the Candidate/Knight relationships were described, and Subaru/Emilia was described as being like elementary schoolers. I think it was intentional that Subaru was childish with Emilia. It's probably supposed to come across as innocent.

I'm also not sure how much of a mature adult he really is with Rem, but I suppose he doesn't seem to go full childish. In a way, Rem seems to be someone he wants to be able to show the worst sides of himself to.

I think the author likes to reuse themes. Even Regulus feels like a take on the idea of a frozen heart and frozen time, except he was never saved.

Like Subaru was back home, he didn't ask for help and didn't seem to openly want it. But instead of having experiences which allowed him to grow past that, Regulus just got a bunch of power which allowed him to stay the same delusional self-centered asshat forever. Regulus is the embodiment of that which Subaru had already overcome.

I think that's what we'll get in this story. Various perspectives and variations on the same concepts. For instance, the Sins are all portrayed differently from person to person. We see multiple cases of shut-ins of various types, and the efforts made to "get them out of the house". None of these cases are identical, but there are similarities.

The manga also skims over certain details, but it does cut less of Rem's lines. One difference I recall is Subaru and Rem's conversation in the timeline when he comes back pissed. She seems more concerned and it takes a little longer for him to reassure her in the manga. You also get more lines of her calling him weak or pathetic when he asks.

One detail the manga is missing from the WN, which is probably important, is Rem sniffing the air in Al's presence before she warns Subaru that Al is probably dangerous.

I don't know why but feel like Rem would love Subaru less if Ram was the one to become a potato. Without Ram, Rem's inferiority complex wouldn't have developed that much and she wouldn't have agonized about what happened on the night Ram's horn got cut off either, so everything Subaru had done for Rem in arc 2 would no longer carry the same impacts as they used to.

People reassign credit and other things. Its a weird headache of a power. If you did it to someone with more worldly impact it would be a nightmare. Rem was basically a shut-in so its not as obnoxious to deal with.

As more explanation here, it doesn't seemingly change actual history, except when it deletes some, but not all of the random things people had. Not even sure Tappei understands how that shit is supposed to work. But people don't remember you specifically. This makes it pretty trivially easy prove that someone did something were you to have Subaru point it out, but otherwise your brain is going to try not to think about it.

That would probably actually vanish. The rules on what it physically effects seem much less clear and is really the part of the power that stops making sense. Wouldn't Rem get stripped naked if things she owned vanish? Her stuff in her room was gone, but they still seemed to have had one of her nightgowns lying around in Crusch's mansion to change her into. Dunno, shit's weird man.

As for what role it sort of plays, it fits into the concept of gluttony kind of. How better to say that you're truly gluttonous than to not stop eating them even after they're basically already gone. Not just devouring a body but everything they have ever done and their entire existence is consumed.

Probably not, she's naturally intimidated by him. The erasure thing wouldn't also randomly change the target of his contract to Rem so you wouldn't have that either, which is basically how Ram got roped in in the first place. Clown might be really confused about why he's kept this random maid around for so long and hasn't involved her in any of his obtuse clown schemes though.

The way I see it, the power only removes what could identify you, but nothing else. There is evidence that someone else must have been working at the manor, since Ram is terrible at upkeep, but nothing that would clearly indicate who it was. You might be able to make an educated guess by counting the plotholes.

It's not really that well explained but the way I always understood it is that the memories related to that person just disappear, which leads people to rearrange events in their own heads in order to explain them. Events don't actually get rewritten, which seems to be a common misconception.

e.g.
>Subaru and Rem went to the village to rescue the kids --> the kids got brought back --> Subaru and Rem saved the kids
becomes
>Subaru and [-] went to the village to rescue the kids --> the kids got brought back --> Subaru must have saved the kids even though that makes no sense, because that's the only way to make sense of that memory.

In the cases where the event seems too hard to retcon, it just seems to become a blank spot in the mind.

I guess it would be easier to understand if we had more sections from the perspectives of people who forgot stuff, but that doesn't really happen much. Of the top of my head I can only think of like, two? and one of them is LN only.

I think if someone gets potatoed at time X, then everyone at time X+1 is exactly the same unless someone tried to remember the potato between now and then, in which case the magic activates and the human mind takes care of everything.
