They're non-romance romance is genuinely more romantic and heartfelt than pretty much any manga with romance as a main focus. Shame that the tournament apparently lost reader interest because it's great and Rio's shot up really high on my list of favorite characters.

From consummate masters of dance like Sakimoto/Sara and Doigaki/Rio, to violent hatefucking like Yamaki/Akiko, to nervous and clumsy but adorable and excited Tsuchhi/Watari, even robots discovering their humanity like Miyadaiku. Or the idols who everyone wants to see on full display and have fans who all want a piece of that action.

Watari and Tsuchiya are far and away the most popular characters (with Watari placing first in both popularity polls so far) while Rio and Doigaki are kind of in the middle. The focus of this arc has been mostly those two and some others getting more of the spotlight (Mikki's sister and the idol, Mikki/Tanya, Miyadaiku to an extent, even Hirarin somewhat). Also, big competition means less characters hanging out or something. So if I'd have to hazard a guess, that's probably it: MCs are out of the spotlight for a bit in favor of other characters because nips only want who's popular and never give a shit about non-MC characters in works.

Personally I like it though because it's done a lot to get me invested in wanting to see what happens with Rio and made her into a pretty great character. Really made me appreciate a lot of the non-MC cast. Especially Hirarin and her big fat tush
>>
>>152501952
You know how this manga feels to me?
You that usually in a sports manga that when the club is almost dead or has 1 or 2 members the protagonists with lots of talent for that sport joins the club and revives it.
Then usually a while afterwards some kouhai who are average want to join the club too, because they got inspired by the MC.
It feels like that the MCs of this manga are those kouhais and those second year senpais feel like the usual standard amateur protagonists who have lots of talent for the sport.
Do you know what I mean?

It sort of allows him to almost do a three genres-in-one thing too. With Tsuchiya/Watari, it's almost SoL "cute kids doing cute things" style. With Yamaki/Akiko, it's much more fiery shonen. With Doigaki/Rio there's almost a more seinen drama vibe.

Like, every single character. It's great. The 3rd years, the 2nd years, the 1st years, the rivals, the champion, the repeating 2nd year student who keeps forming a band, the teacher who is already perfectly mature and acts like she should, the friends who all accept the named players...even the "background" characters like "knowledgeable person" and "husband." I really, really like that every person in this manga has a personality, not a trope, and they arrived at this still-developing personality because of things that all happened in their past.

Even though it's a manga about dancing and seems to have exaggeratedly masculine and hyper beautiful women, it feels very very real. It's great! I really identify with Doigaki, for example.

Doigaki's brilliant.

I think it's kind of unfortunate his design is so absurd, but it's a testament to his overall character that he's still very well liked despite looking like a generic muscle gay Japanese guy with fat lips and a huge 'fro.

I like how, during the competition, he treats each characters in the same way, being rivals, friends or protagonists, it's like he gives to each one a chance to be the main protagonist of the manga.

It deeply saddens me how crappy an existence sesuji wo pin has gotten, while yes its so lucky to of survived this long and seems to be kind of safe for nor (please dont let me jinx that) this really has just been a series that never gets the appreciation it deserves. For starters the only reason its survived other than a few top 5 rankings here and there is cause jump shitcanned all their long runners and by pure luck all the new stuff has generally not taken off until recently. It constantly ranks low and seems to be the most expendable out of all the consolidated series in jump at the moment, it'll never get an anime due to it requiring a pretty decently big budget to really pull off the dancing which this series just doesnt have the following to justify, it'll forever be in the shadow of Ballroom e Youkosodespite being very different in tone and even dances, and just in general seems to be barely surviving along most of its life without making a real splash.

Its just fucking depressing cause this series is honest to god excellent, its been a while since something that is so optimistic whilst not forgoing the harsher sides of reality, something that puts focus on all the cast and doesnt exaggerate antagonists instead making them people who genuinly love the sport and the people they compete with, and just has one of the cutest subtle romances in a while that never gets in your face but has had steady development in baby steps. It just saddens me this series doesnt get so much more.

So guys I have a question i really don't want to ask but with this series being kind of an oddity in jump i think its something that should be asked.

Do you all think sesuji wo pin would be better off just to start finding a way to wrap itself up while it still has the chance. With jump finding alot more series to latch onto sesuji kind of is losing its sacrificial lambs to keep it afloat when the rating go sour and lets be honest they are going to go sour again, the best part of the entire series almost got it cancelled so we know its gonna happen again. I just feel like even though this series clearly is taking its time to flesh out every character for the long run of a few years of a run i worry its really just not going to make it to that and really wonder if maybe yoko should just dedicate the next few months to wrapping it all up before tides turn and it is forced to wrap up in much less time.

Kind of confused here. Saw this thread some hours ago, and now after getting a couple chapters done, is generic? Is kind of shallow and lacks any genuine emotional moment that is not just bland Shounen Jump tropes without the heart. Might just because I had the pleasure to read two other great dance manga before this, but I expected more. Is just another Shounen Jump series is what I get.

The Ballroom e yokoso fanboys who shit on Sesuji are the worst
>>
>>152528167
Are you saying the start was generic, in which case yeah sesuji doesnt break new ground but it also gets continuously better as the series going on and gets genuinly pretty emotional. Sesuji's greatest strength that separates it from other sports manga and especially ones in jump is its optimism. In sesuji there arent any characters that exist to drive conflict and instead opts to make even the antagonists all genuinly good and friendly people. The protagonists have to actually work and experience failure before they can even do anything of worth and when drama does kick in its actually warranted and not too melodramatic. The romance is handled extremly well in all of the implied romantic subplots but done in a subtle way that it never takes away from the rest of the story. And just in general the series really manages to expand on itself more and more as it goes on and fleshes out its entire main and supporting cast.

one nice touch it has too is that while optimistic sesuji is alot more harshly realistic in how situations go out than other sports manga, there are quite a few times where the worst thing that could happen does and there arent any miracles that bail the protagonists out but it manages to do this well enough without feeling artificial nor done in a way that hurts the optimistic mood.
>>
>>152528312
There's also a guy that appears in Ballroom threads shitting on it while praising Sesuji so I'm almost sure it's the same guy just shitposting.
>>
>>152528312
I mean the comparisons are fair given its the same subject matter even though sesuji is about far more forms of dance but yeah its still a shame it gets unjustly shit on for it especially when both for all intents and purposes should be able to coexist without overlap cause they go for very different tones and style.
>>
>>152528312
>Stop voicing your opinions
Bottling up and shutting down people that don´t share the same opinion as you is, and will never be a good idea. Ballroom is better, but sure, they can act less jerk about it. Go back to tumblr though if you just want a hugbox.
>>
>>152528393
thats always a legit possibility as shounen jump threads bring out the ultimate autism in a couple of shitposters who always try to start some sort of rivalry again something in jump. There is that guy who kept trying to bring hero acadamia up in world trigger threads just to spark something though people were too engrossed in the series to really give him the time of day.

though seusji does get compared in a negative light to ballroom elsewhere, not entirely to the point of shitting on it but its safe to say more people will consider it inferior, its going to live in its shadow no matter what.
>>
>>152528167
>>lacks emotional content

>Optimism
Have you heard the three SJ battle words? They are all about being optimism.

Quite sure 99% of their stuff are meant to inspire positive feelings. Exceptions might be the odd Death Note and one-shots + isolated case of comedy chapters. There is nothing unique here.
>>
>>152528573
Emotional content that is straight from the heart of the mangaka. What I get here is throwaway a la Hollywood stock.
>>
>>152528622
Your misconstruing what i mean by optimism, in alot of shounen jump stuff they over exaggerate hardships and the drama to an over the top level that winds up weakening the whole deal despite the overall tones generally being light hearted in tone, Sesuji doesnt do that and instead focuses more on the love and appreciation of the sport without any of the synical sides. They dont make it out to be easy but theres none of the ptsd tier inducing training stuff you see in alot of shit like ippo for example and the competitions have never been treated like these life or death events.

Thats what i mean by optimism, it doesnt force in hardships for the sake of drama or infuses cynicism to cloud the sport with more drama than there actually is in it.
>>
>>152528717
How so, nothing about sesuji feels hollywood like at all since its all quite grounded and often times focuses on how things dont work out for the MC's just cause they tries more than their best. something Hollywood stock would be more in line with something far more over the top that paints the heroes in a way more heroic/impressive light kind of like haikyuu or kuroku no basket. Which isnt a bad thing either but sesuji goes for a far different tone.
>>
>>152527988
IIRC it was said the competition ends with chapter 81. We're at chapter 68 right now so it doesn't seem like it'll last that long. There's not near as much drama involved as there is with the standard since that's what most of the cast dances (I think latin's just Yamaki/Akiko, Michikage/Naomi and then Doigaki/Rio and Sakimoto/Sara).

>>152528167
>a couple chapters
That's your problem. Once you get to Tsuchiya and Watari's first competition it improves. Then you get the cultural festival arc which is 10/10 with a 100/10 ending. Then a nice training arc that acts as set up for the current tournament arc which, again, is great.

Really, read up through the end of chapter 21 (end of the cultural festival) and if you don't like it then you should probably just drop it.

It's not even just on here but damn near anywhere on the internet Sesuji is brought up, there's people who just have to jump in to declare how superior Ballroom is.

>>152528859
the series didnt really sell itself to me until the festival arc. I was actually quite disappointed with it cause i loved molester man and nnanie master yet sesuji just felt way less funny and interesting, im glad i stuck with it cause after about 20 chapters it really hooks you into the characters and relationships. It does an excellent job at reaching emotional highs in justified ways than forcing drama for the sake of hindrances.

the one direction bit was the part that really got me though.

I've never heard of this Ballroom e Youkoso series, thank you for introducing me to it.

I agree with how you feel on Sesuji wo Pin though, but sometimes staying out of the spotlight is what allows an author to stay truer to what they want out of their work. more spotlight means more fan demand and pressure, which in turn can cause your editor to try and push you in a different direction.

Okay, you have kind of triggered me here. So I´m going to give you a honest reply and be a hundred twenty serious with you now.

As someone that have participated in pro table tennis scene: You are fucking wrong you goddamn fucking retard. That out of the way, let us talk pro sport.

Pro sport will for majority of cases make you a worse person. Not just talking about losing, this also apply to the winners. You are constantly hurting someone on your climb for that win. Inspiring words from a winner is something that can only be uttered by someone that have devastated the dreams of others. To be able to convey anything positive from pro sport, you have to truly dig deep and find that real feeling. That one true moment of: Yes this is it, this is the moment that made me glad I picked up this sport and invest hours upon hours into it.

This is hollywood fake mate.
>>
>>152528374

I'd say the nicest example of this is the first competition. Tsuchiya spends the entire lead up being nervous but when the time comes it's Watari who has a nervous breakdown and starts crying because the nerves and stage fright have gotten to her. So Tsuchiya does what he can to cheer her up, pick her up and slowly help them stumble through the dance. They get shit scores but "complete the dance" was their sole objective and they manage to (just barely) do that.

comparisons for the sake of comparisons are almost always done as a means to provoking. Rarely is there times to actually bring in direct comparisons between things that arent by same creators/ in a franchise.

I'll never understand why similarity always brings out a all or nothing mentality in people.unless its a direct copy like down to actual plagiarism then thats one thing but rarely if ever is that the reason for comparisons. I feel like games get this worse than anything due to how limited genres can be.
>>
>>152529285
He's the author of Molester though.
>>
>>152529336
Technically. He just took a 2chan story and adapted it to manga form. Some would call that authoring, some wouldn't.
>>
>>152529170
....this isnt pro sports dude its about kids in a high school club. Thats what most sports manga are but then they exaggerate it to Olympics tier training with added power levels, sesuji is just a series about people who enjoy their hobbies and how those hobbies made them grow as people. The few pro players they do show in the manga are treated in the harsh training you normally see.

And you still havent explained what you mean by hollywood, what about this is hollywood.
>>
>>152529432
the 2chan story only makes up the 2chan posts they show, everything that makes molester man a good manga is the in betweens, interactions, and gags he adds in. If you want proof that hes the reason molester man is as good as it is go watch the dogshit molester man movie adaptation and see how much blander the story is in less talented hands.

Ballroom is pretty good so its worth a read, its alot more typical than sesuji is but thats not a bad thing. Its just much more serious business though its still got heart when it needs it. it came back from a berserk tier hiatus recently.

>>152529170
A big part of Sesuji is about showing how dance is enjoyable, even at the risk of professional competitive points. Of course there are characters who are legit into the professional aspect of it, but the main cast and the rivals all emphasize that what they do, they do for fun.

Theres one moment in chapter 20 that just sold me on the entire manga and its only continued to get better from there. its always gonna be kind of at risk of cancellation but the tournament arc its been on recently has basically been good enough to act as a finale justifying the entire series existence so at least theres that.

at the moment its pretty safe but its had alot of close calls and id be lying if i said it probably is only around due to other series bombing. Its a very good series that definitely can work in the long run so it'll be a damn shame if its cut short.

I say hey world trigger spent almost 2 years barely surviving and avoidng cancellation multiple times by thin margine before it became one of the faces of modern jump so theres always hope, sesuji will never reach that level but theres still hope a sudden popularity boost may happen though i really doubt it will get an anime.

BUT- WAIT A SEC!!!

I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO THROW THE MATCH FOR DOIGAKI!! HOWEVER! HE'S MADE HIS RESOLUTION AND IS TAKING IT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL!!! HE'S GOING FINISH OFF DOIGAKI AND RIO-SEMPAI FOR GOOD!!! IS THERE NO LIMITS TO THE CHAMPION'S POWER!?!
>>
>>152536252
I saw that and I had the same "wait, he's going to throw the match?" thought. Then he started dancing and it's like oh, of fucking course not. Of course, Doigaki and Rio would never accept anything less than beating him at his very best as well.

I'm going to assume that Doigaki and Rio win and Sakimoto's copying others techniques, while cool, will cost him points.
>>
>>152536728
There are no more points. The judges just rank them. Kinryuuin just fell down and Sakimoto literally schooled the other three. So it's neck to neck between Doigaki and Sakimoto.

Kinryuuin was getting fatter because his earlier "shape" where he was more skinny and lithe was literally killing him, by his doctor's orders. Doc said he needed to stop or at least get a lot stronger "fatter." So, he got fatter, felt better.

This girl LOVES Kinryuuin, like crazy Yandere for him, it's unending. She can see he's hurting himself and she'd much rather take a loss than see that. She's saving him.
>>
>>152533877
Originally (and still now), Michikage was happy to see a "rival" in Yamaki for the Latin dance. But Yamaki has more fun teasing and quarreling than actually getting along in a friendly way. He likes being "bad" so he antagonizes the superior Michikage but still lets slip that he knows what he's doing and it's all in his own fun from time to time.

I also love how the girls all just fucking love their partners. The guy they dance with; these girls are SO HAPPY to be matched with them it's like they don't want anyone else.

Neither of those was necessary. If you are really worried about the necessity of a post, however, you should not have posted. And since I replied, that's four. Four shitty posts. I actually don't mind it if Yamaki and Akiko don't end up as a couple. It'd be a nice contrast to the usual arguing couple cliche where, no, they're totally incompatible and no secret twu wuv bullshit.

I'm going to guess Kiyoto/Tanya, Miyadaiku/Kashiwa and some of the other pairs show up by the end. Probably some final get together with the old dance club members + Michiru-chan-sensei.

this manga does relationships way better than any other, in fact it does a lot of things better. The main pairing is like an personification of this manga, which is not trying to do extraordinary things or pull innovative ideas only for the sake of being different, it does the given tropes rights and adds some fun into it, it doesn't try to go overboard with anything and concentrate on the characters instead of an overblown story, giving everyone their time to shine. I specially loved Miyadaikus character development, it was kinda how people try to figure out why others like this manga. He has really come a long way from pic related to this >>152510904

I wouldn't say this manga is the best of the best but it is certainly underrated.

This is why I don't think it getting axed. It finally rising in ToC ranking hanging around the middle as well popular buzz ever since the tournament ended. Not to mention all the new series being failures, Gintama ending soon and World Trigger Hiatus, if anything WSJ editors want to keep this series alive because they losing too many series too soon.

I'm not arguing that it's not ending, just saying if it does it probably the mangaka got board of the series and decide to move on. Maybe it could be that Yoko simply doesn't want to work on a long series, pic related.

It wouldn't be the first time this happen in WSJ if it does.

I think its safe to assume its just going to end soon. Its probably a combo is jump not having much faith in the series and yoko dropping out. This is likley skipping just to get it to end prior to chapter 100.

>>
>>152573173
see i think if this was intentional its still going to have a good finale, but theres no denying the disappointment this time skip entails as so much interesting stuff is getting skipped. We arent going to see the characters growing gradually both in terms of skill and relationships. Even if there wasnt going to be much done in between these 2 time periods it'd of been much better to show the time skip over the course of maybe 4 or 5 chapters so it doesnt feel like we just missed a bunch. Thats kind of why i dont buy that this was yoko deciding to change things up but rather him ending it.

I mean we will see, but this is just really disheartening especially since the series was doing absolutely fantastic quality wise recently.

Nah this wont be worse, Mx0 got shitcanned and then contradicted everything it stood for, sesuji is likley just ending thats rushed but not something thaty devalues whats before it. It reads like yoko does want to end the series but not leave things hanging.

All things considered almost all plot points have been wrapped up so this time skip is more disappointing cause potential events dont happen more so than really ruining anything.
