People compare it to LL because they have a lot in common: Bushiroad, similar promoting model, targets idol audience, the plot will be similar too, even the MC acts a lot like Chika/Honoka.

LL, Bandori and K-On all involve Seiyu performances.

Bandori unlike K-On explicitly began as a multimedia franchise meant to sell CDs and much more whereas K-On started as a lowly 4koma which somehow became extremely popular. When K-On became an anime, they tacked on the Seiyu Performances and trained the staff to actually play in a band to make concert money. With Poppin Party, the cast seems to have been selected based on whether they could play starting with Aimi on guitar.

I just wish the LL vibes weren't so strong. As a pointless second-tier SoL/band anime it can work, but by being visually so reminiscent of LL it's setting the bar unnecessarily high (and alienating would-be fans that hated LL).

I don't even know why it reminds me so much of it, but at several points I really thought I was watching Honkers and Nico.

That point aside, it was a pretty good first episode. I know this feeling, though. This is the part where I get my hopes up and then the anime loses steam dramatically and by episode 4 it's completely soulless and empty. Whatever, I haven't gotten tired of that ride yet, so count me in.

They form the band.
Bass player and Keyboard player got some ideas for songs.
The girl with the blue guitar plays a very good solo once in their best song and after the song is finished she forgets how to play it or how it was.
She tries to get the solo again. This consumes all her time, she stops studying and practicing the other songs.
She feels so bad she suddenly stops practicing with the other girls.
Bass player starts blaming herself for not recording the session where she played that solo.
Drummer likes to play so much she don't stop playing anytime and this makes the Keyboard player to yell at her, after all the drummer didn't played everything as Arisa (Keyboard player) told her to do. Arisa also thinks that the Drummer doesn't even care that their second guitarrist isn't coming to practice.
MC tries to fix the situation but she is accused of sexual harassment from a bunch of girls from the school.
They somehow overcome all this and go into a power metal band contest.
1st place is a CD recording.

It was pretty boring. Not as bad as Idol Jihen, but not good enough to make me put up with piss subs and that horrible encoding. Maybe the next episode will introduce a character worth caring about, but I doubt it.
