Subaru isn't attracted to Emilia because she's kind, he's attracted to Emilia because he thinks he's in a Chinese cartoon until the despair really gets going. And part of being in a isekai show is that he gets cool OP powers and gets a cute, loving, delicate girl to like him because he's the big cool OP hero who saves the day. That is the premise of a lot of his actions, even his heroic ones. That's why he does all that cringey shit with the queen selection, because that shit is supposed to work just like in muh chinese cartoons.

The point that it DOESNT work because this is supposed to be a deconstruction of the genre, and the culimation of that failure is Emilia wrecking his shit and telling him how fake his "love" for her is. None of it has anything to do with love, it has to do with him being a stereotypical isekai protag who thinks he can do dumb shit and save the day without knowing how the world works.

Now, the whole point of the despair Subaru is put through isn't just the pain and suffering of losing people he had gotten close to, the point was to slowly and painfully disabuse him of his little isekai fantasy and make him realize that he needed to learn how shit worked before he could make a difference.

Now onto Rem. The thing about Rem is that she initially hates Subaru because of the smell. But over time, due to Subaru's heroic actions, she slowly learns to trust him. But here's the thing. Those actions were motivated by selfishness, ignorance, and greed. Subaru did those things because he was a retarded isekai hero. But the thing is that Rem doesn't give a shit about his motivations or his short comings because to her it's his actions that matter, and Rem sees the glimmer of a real hero (to her) in those. This is the point where Subaru starts over, starts becoming a REAL hero rather than a fake chinese cartoon hero.

Ok so, ignoring the shitposting, i'm just going to add a bit of what i found in here about Al.

I took a look at the chapter in the WN where Subaru and Al talk to each other in arc 3 and he reveals about being from earth. The circumstances around the meeting are different though. Unlike from the LN/anime/manga where he got a ride to the castle from Priscilla, in the WN he solid snaked his way into the castle and got caught by Priscilla while hidden inside of a closet.

But here's the interesting part of it, in the WN Al mentions that he has amnesia, just like what the other anon mentioned. Specifically he can't remember anything about himself from his time on earth it seems.

Not sure on the light novel. I have a friend who will probably check on it later to see if he can notice if Al mentioned anything about having Amnesia while in the carriage.

Also, the line in the WN after Al meets Rem and seems to feel disgusted is specifically this one.

Unlike from the manga it seems he doesn't talk about something being alive per say, he just talks about being disgusted and mentioning SOMETHING. But the idea is basically the same. He is disgruntled over the fact that apparently something he thought was a certain way, is different because Ram has a sister, and both happen to be alive. Most likely something related to that fact.

If it's something that is even alive, or something that "Exists" because they are alive i'm not sure.

This would have been better if Emilia was the one in a coma. A candidate for the throne being forgotten should have more impact on the series as a whole, and gives the readers an actual reason to somewhat care about Emilia. It would have also extended more background on the candidacy.

When asked about how he felt about Rem's popularity overshadowing Emilia, Tappei answered that Emilia would continue as heroine for six remaining Arcs. I looked up the date of this Q&A, and it was posted around Chapter 113 of Arc 4. Six remaining Arcs would be until Arc 10.

I only looked into this because I saw an entirely different interview where Tappei said he originally planned for there to be only 10 Arcs total, but revised his plans to add another one around the time Arc 3 was ending. The plan should have already included 11 Arc by the time Arc 4 was almost done. That's it. His answer could have just been a brainfart where he forgot there were now 11 Arcs, or he was subtly hinting at something more for the final Arc.

Well, there's going to be some bias here, but I'll do my best. Rem got attention when WNfags started making a big deal about her in the early threads, whether it was people who loved her or people who hated her rabid fanbase. People were intrigued by this strangely popular character, who was still caving in Subaru's skull in the anime, especially since it was difficult to find anyone who wanted to talk about Emilia in the same detail.

Original spoilers were mostly vague, with some being fake, but I think that's where it started. We knew Rem got eaten long before we knew about the confession scne. I made "Who?" jokes, and it caught on. "Remfags BTFO" posts started appearing, as well as people calling her irrelevant or a cuck. We got more than a few copypastas either going on about her horrifying ogre face or being a cuck that we'd see all the time.

Anti-Emilia memes, like her being stinky, also appeared. Waifu wars had begun. People would still ask for spoilers, and we started seeing people talk about Emilia's development coming too late in Arc 4, how her relationship with Subaru was stuck in status quo, or how Betty became the new best girl in Rem's absence. Remfags started gloating.

Then spfag came in to "correct" everyone on the various fake spoilers, and things went entirely to shit due to his bias. We'd have "Emiliafags" declaring every spoiler they didn't like to be fake, even if they came from spfag. He ignored this, since they jerked him off, and spent most of his time shitting on "delusional remfags". Some shitstorms started going on with people complaining that he was misportraying or dismissing Rem-related scenes. He called the Carmilla scene "dicksucking" if I recall correctly.

Well it actually very much is in a number of ways, as he isn't the first person to be isekai'd to that world and the Fugel and Hoshin hints. As the founder of Kararagi was from someone in coming from Japan. Plus he isn't the only one with the Witch's sent as Al and Subaru's daughteru Meili has one as well. Hinting that they also came from Subaru's world, etc. etc.

Its just a whole slew of shit that ties to why he was isekai'd there in the first place.

Al doesn't or Rem would have been much more aggressive towards him. She smelled some kind of danger, but it was not the Witch's Scent. Similarly Meili smells different too, she has some kind of miasma that animals hate, but its not the Witch scent.

Rem isn't quite that suicidal, and never acted immediately in Subaru's case, and she already learned a lesson about being too hasty with the Witch's Scent. She couldn't tell Subaru Al had the scent either, since he just showed he was so enraged about them that he'd stab Crusche with a spoon. That would likely have sabotaged his effort at diplomacy.

I don't think so. Meili's ability that likely causes her miasma is something like a blessing, but possibly artificial like how Elsa is a weird vampire thing due to magical meddling. Al is a bit unknown. If he followed the witch cult he should have the scent like all other members, but he doesn't seem to. Either its too weak to be detectable when near Subaru or he might be a former one that no longer smells or might never have been part of it at all, though hot speculah is usually that he was at least formerly so.

Well, it's impossible to tell. Despite his appearance, Aldebaran is now a key political figure and they were in his house. Mentioning the Witch Cult would trigger Subaru and cause an incident. Assaulting or accusing Al in his own house would cause an incident. No one else nearby can detect the scent, so she'd have no defense if she was arrested. Emilia's faction would take a major blow.

Anyhow, the descriptions I heard only mention that Rem is smelling at something while Al and Subaru talk. However, a writer rarely puts in pointless details. If Rem is smelling at something, then there's something to smell. Much like how Al's full star name is only dropped the loop after Betelgeuse's own star name is revealed, and he introduces the concept of Sin bishops and the absence of pride.

I won't say she's too far from where she started, but she seems at least at little more capable of independent action.
