But that makes sense with how China does games now. There are lots of professional game playing "guilds" which are run like companies. The players even dorm together and earn money for the company by winning and helping sales of various products and branding.

You even see the results of some of these companies at the DOTA tournaments where cash prizes are awarded.

A Google search tells me that the largest MMO map ever is WWII Online, which has a half scale map of Western Europe clocking in at 115,831 square miles. If you get past the "why would they ever do this" part, having the characters hop servers wouldn't be very hard though. And if the content creation tools were easy enough, it might even be a reasonable choice for a company. You get a premade mechanics set with a passionate dabbles already existing. All you have to do is create the world for your area, and you'd presumably have access to content made for other servers if you needed some examples. And from the sound of things you'd have near free reign in terms of what you wanted to do locally. The unique mechanics wouldn't be all that hard either.

A test server where you have to level and farm up your gear before attempting to actually fight what's being tested makes no sense. It makes it much more probably that you could buy all of the equipment for 1 gold while having infinity cash or some other misc mechanic to enable players to gear than making them go through the drawn out and tedious leveling process just to see how 1 fight goes. (or they make a copy of a normal ET character and that copy gets sent to the moon.)

Something like Journey could probably work, but it'd take ages to make.

You'd have to build zones that are each at least 5 kilometers long. You'd have to use good-looking assets to increase the sense of wonder of each zone. You'd have to fill the zones with puzzles, hazards, maybe some enemies. And some amazing skyboxes that make you want to think "I want to go there". You'd have to make some interesting and fluid gameplay, so people can go fast or slow depending on what they prefer. Then you'd have to piece everything together, handle servers so they don't crash easily and keeps everyone synchronized, and so on and so forth.

It's a major undertaking.

Yggdrasil is balanced and almost a perfect game, there's no mana pots so buyfags can't have an overwhelming advantage and you can find top class gear and items just by exploring and fighting.

I don't remember that much about Overlord and never got into it further after watching the anime, but I do remember that MC had OP items that were only available with Gatchas. And once you bring gatcha shit into the equation balance has no more place in you game design. So if you want to make an argument for a balanced game despite that it'll ne hard.
