The light novel gets really, really boring after the first arc. Immediately after the duel with Spear Hero and reconciling with Ranpha, it becomes the most tooth-grindingly boring isekai you've ever seen.

And by that I mean, the standard Moebius loop of level-grinding, trading, and basically being unable to do any wrong. This is why stats aren't meant to be LITERAL in RPGs, people, and why actual fantasy heroes don't level grind.

The extended revenge fantasy of Naofumi ALWAYS being right and everyone else being wrong is really dumb, too. The other heroes are equal to him, but they're useless idiots. Changing the Princess's name to Bitch is also just really petty.

Like, the author went full ham here, at a certain point. It's tedious, but it has to be said that it's no worse than most other mediocre isekai novels.

I wonder why slaves are so prominent in isekai nowadays. Is there supposed to be some "comfy" aspect to it? Slaves are of use and living, so they normally should be expensive but nowadays, they seem too cheap. There's also the aspect of using them without any sense of remorse. After all, they are slaves. When you insert a mentality of a moralfag, it lacks uniformity and is essentially hypocritical if you bought such use for a slave and essentially make daughters out of them even though stories attempt to excuse you as "no choice". Just think if Shield-tagonist actually got some adventurer join him, instead of a slave loli. They are prominent due to how authors are making the world middle ages tier. And they are rarely cheap unless they are sickly. It's just the MC is usally rolling in bank, or ends up spending 90% if their cash.

The slaves end up attached because most of the time, they are getting better treatment than a slave usually gets. So at the very least, they don't want to fuck it up.

It could have gone alot better than the usual mc treating slave alot better even though it looks like daughter-doting. You see pic related and his way with slaves. His first slave was all battered up and broken. He bought the slave with repercussions in mind as well as the expensive price and the outcome if buying her would be acceptable. He buys her because he sees benefit. He manages to recreate her image in former glory. The once broken girl became attached to such a person (even though he said experiment in the middle of it). But he has actual plans for her and actually uses her in his own plans. He is not above having her commit atrocious acts for his benefit. In fact, his sugar-coated words towards her every now and then are merely poison underneath, and guess what, she is willing and acts as a slave and servant. In my opinion, this story does that aspect well. Moreover, like I said, she was expensive but mc had the money with his position.

Look, you have to understand - these books are aimed at a target audience who have absolutely NOTHING going for them. These are people who don't dare to self-insert into Kirito, because Sword Art Online makes them feel inadequate.

So you have to go with the very basic, bottom-tier things of "Oh, he's nice. He's kind." But they also know that the MC isn't particularly nice or kind, he's just 'relatively' so compared to the fantasy realm he finds himself in.

/a/, be honest, what would you really do with servants/slaves? Death March, shieldbro and other series went daughteru or generic-never-was-a-slave waifu route. What would be your route?

That entirely depends on the girl. In Death March, I'd do it just like Satou and daughter them up since Pochi and Tama are straight up adorable.
If they actually are past puberty I might jump if they offer, but if they have some other skill I'd use them for that. Free them if they earn me enough money to pay back the cost I spent on them.
